Joseph Alfred Bernard
December 3, 1923 ~ September 13, 2012
Joseph Alfred Bernard, 88, beloved family man and friend to all, departed this life on 13 September. Joe began life's journey in New Hampshire before joining the Army Air Corps at 19. In the course of serving his country he survived a miracle air mission in which the entire crew earned the Purple Heart. As a result of his injuries, Joe had a near-death experience during which he encountered a being who instructed him to return to earth to complete his life. He spent his long and happy renewed life in Virginia and Maryland, united with Madeline Clinton Bernard, wife of 64 years, along with their children, Paul (Abby), Barbara and Bruce Bernard, and grandchildren, Christopher, Linsay and Dylan. Joe flourished in a 35-year career with the Defense Mapping Agency, Topographic Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joe's name to Wounded Warriors.
