Our beloved father, Joseph Robert Volpe, Jr., passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024 at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Colleary Volpe of Gainesville; four children, Marianne E. Volpe of Sequim, Wa., Patricia A. Volpe of Dumfries, Joseph R. Volpe III of Falls Church, and Suzanne M. Volpe (Glenn D. Jones) of Sterling; a sister, Mary Ellen Austen of Boynton Beach, Florida; two granddaughters and one great-grandson.

Joseph was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 29, 1934 to Joseph Robert Volpe and Anne Carson Volpe. He attended Brooklyn Tech High School and then received an Electrical Engineering degree from Brooklyn College. It was during college, he met his future wife, Nancy, while he was also serving in the Army Reserves. They were married on February 13, 1961.

Following college, the newlyweds moved to Northern Virginia for Joseph’s career with the federal government. Over his career, Joseph served in multiple defense-related agencies under the U.S. Department of Defense. In 1983, he received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from American University. During his distinguished career with the federal government, Joseph attained the level of Senior Executive Service. As a civilian, he was honored to hold the position of Deputy Director of SHAPE Technical Center in The Hague, Holland from 1986 to 1989.

Following his retirement, Joseph was able to continue serving through his Lions Club. He had been involved since the 1970s, however with his service to his country behind him, Joseph dedicated his time, talent and treasure to serving through various volunteer positions, including serving as District Governor (2007-2008) for the Lions Club in Virginia.

Visitation will be held at Money & King Funeral Home located at 171 Maple Avenue West in Vienna, Virginia on Wednesday, May 22 at 10 a.m. with the Funeral Service to follow at 11 a.m. All friends and family are welcome. The internment will then be held at National Memorial Park/King David Memorial Gardens located at 7482 Lee Highway in Falls Church, Virginia at 1 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations can be made to the Lions Club International Foundation at 300 W. 22nd Street, Oak Brook, IL 60523-8842 or online at www.lionsclubs.org.
