October 10, 1926 ~ November 3, 2010
J. William Nutter (“Bill”), age 84, formerly of Vienna, VA, died peacefully at his home at Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, VA, on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, surrounded by his family.
Bill was born on October 10, 1926, in Providence, Rhode Island. An Eagle Scout, Bill graduated from Yale University, George Washington Law School, and the Naval Justice School. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and was called back into service during the Korean War. Mr. Nutter was employed by the Federal government for 25 years, where he served as Chief Majority Council for the Indians Claims Commission. In his retirement, he sold real estate in Vienna.
Bill was a great husband and loving father, devoted to his family and the Vienna community. A man of many talents, Bill was an avid woodworker, patient fisherman, skilled athlete, and thoughtful coach. Mr. Nutter was a man of strong faith, courage, and character who loved his family, the Boston Red Sox, and all water sports, including sailing, canoeing, swimming, and even water skiing, which he learned after the age of fifty. His daughters and grandchildren will remember him most for his quick wit, ability to fix anything, unconditional love and devotion, and Sunday morning blueberry pancakes.
Bill was an active member of the Vienna Lions Club. He was a founding member of the Vienna Community Center and the Vienna Woods Swim Club. Bill devoted eighteen years to coaching his daughters and hundreds of youth in softball, basketball, and soccer. He served as President and Commissioner of the Vienna Pigtail Ponytail League and as Trustee, Treasurer, and Usher at the Vienna Presbyterian Church. He was active at his daughters’ schools, serving several years as PTO President.
Mr. Nutter is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patricia Purcell Nutter, and their four daughters: Nancy Ellen Lyon of Annandale; Jody Nutter Amberly of South Riding; Patricia Nutter Booth, and her husband, Gary Booth, of Clayton, NC; and Janet Nutter Sorrells of Centreville.
