Oakton, VA – Joyce Lynn Smock, age 79, passed away on April 16th, 2024, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband, William Smock, daughters, Kathryn Smock and Stephanie Farley (Bryan), one grandchild, Juniper Farley, and a sister, Carol Bishop (John). Joyce was born in Clifton, NJ, the daughter of Violet and Edward Potchoiba. Joyce graduated from Clifton High School, class of 1962 and earned her Bachelor of Education from Elizabethtown College, class of 1966. It was there she met Bill, who playfully referred to her as “New Jersey” when they first met.

Joyce began a long and rewarding teaching career in 1966 in Mahwah, NJ, and later taught in California, again in New Jersey, North Carolina, yet again in New Jersey, and finally Virginia, where she lived with her family for over 35 years. She taught at Great Falls Elementary School for the last 20 years and was beloved by students and parents alike.

Besides teaching, Joyce loved gardening, her 3 cats and 2 dogs, reading voraciously, doting on her two daughters, her son-in-law, and joyously fussing over her only grandchild, all while holding hands with Bill, her dedicated husband for over 57 years. She was a lover of snow days off from school, good seafood, holidays, and fireworks.

Joyce will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.

Please join Joyce’s family for her viewing, held May 3rd between 4-7pm with a service on May 4th at 10am, both at Money and King Funeral Home, Vienna, VA.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I will always remember the great barn Christmas Parties at the Smock house and how Joyce always had a lovely spread as well as delighted in all of us being there. Good times so thanks for the memories. RIP

  2. I will always remember Mrs.Smock as my favorite teacher. She taught me at Great Falls Elementary School for second grade in 2002-2003. I actually still use her multiplication songs she taught me today and have the Santa clause pillow she gave each of us. My fiance, Hank, was also in that class, along with two of our best friends. We are getting married on May 18th in just a few weeks and are forever grateful to have met in Mrs. Smock’s class! We are so sorry for your loss but please know how much her students loved her!
