Ken was my boss, a couple levels up, in the late 1970s when I was a young supervisor at the US EPA. Despite our age gap and differing backgrounds, we developed a mutual respect and enjoyed each other’s company. Ken was a firm, but kind and fair manager and a dignified, classy man with a good sense of humor. I feel privileged to have known him and worked for him. Environmental protection has lost one of its best and brightest. Best wishes to Ken’s family and close friends.
By chance I discovered that Kenneth Mackenthum passed away at the end of last year. I and my colleagues work in the field of wastewater treatment, and in the past few years we have several times made use of an excellent paper that he wrote with Clarence McNabb: Mackenthun, K.M. and McNabb, C.D. (1961) Stabilization pond studies in Wisconsin. Journal of the Water Pollution Control Federation 33(12), 1234-1250. We have a paper in press for which it was one of the key sources of data, and on Friday I am travelling to Australia to give a presentation at the 9th IWA Specialist Group Conference on Waste Stabilisation Ponds which is entirely based on this work. I and my co-authors at the University of Southampton would like to pass on both our condolences, and our respect and gratitude for his excellent work.
