January 5, 1968 ~ December 11, 2024

Born in: Starbuck, Minnesota
Resided in: Vienna, Virginia

Kristin “Kris” Jean Tollefson Fuchs passed away on 11 December, 2024. She was born on January 5, 1968, and grew up on her family’s dairy farm in Starbuck, MN. Even though her life took her away from the farm, she loved it, especially her two horses — Charlie, and Teardrop. Her childhood showcased her creativity and kindness; had a talent for art (chalk drawings still hang in the family home), singing as a member of a local high school choral group and balanced her dependable nature with humor, as seen in moments like cleverly outwitting a haggling customer at the family’s sweet corn stand.

In her teenage years, Kris worked at the Starbuck Dairy Queen and later as a bank teller. She was passionate about volleyball, playing competitively in high school. She also earned the title of Pope County Dairy Princess, representing her connection to the farm and community. After graduating from Starbuck High School in 1986, she attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1990 in Business Communications.

Post-college, Kris moved to Minneapolis and began her 25-year career with Marriott, starting in the event planning department and eventually becoming part of a team developing computer based internal training programs. This training development position required a relocation to Marriott headquarters, and so in 1995, she moved to Arlington, VA. All the while living in big cities and participating in social groups, such as the Hash House Harriers (ON-ON), she always kept an eye towards the family farm. Often bringing others there to experience the lifestyle and even convincing her friends to come there and her hometown for her wedding in 2003.

After retiring from Marriott, Kris focused entirely on service to her family. For her daughters; coaching and assisting with volleyball, supporting their involvement in soccer, and volunteering at the middle school store. She balanced her parenting with a mix of flexibility and firmness. For her parents; when her mother began declining in health, Kris frequently traveled back to Starbuck, MN to support her father over the last 12 years. For her brother, when the family moved to Fairfax, VA, in 2014 from Denver, CO, Kris warmly welcomed and assisted in their transition, cherishing the closeness of family life.

Kris will be remembered as a dutiful daughter, loving mother, devoted sister, caring friend, avid reader, and movie buff. She embodied creativity, humor, and strength, leaving a lasting legacy through her family, her community. Kris is survived by her husband of 21 years, Brian Fuchs of Vienna VA; her daughters, Rowan Anne Fuchs, currently studying in Honolulu, HI and Erin Melanie Fuchs, Vienna, VA; her dad, David Tollefson of Starbuck MN; her sister, Karen Smith (Steve) of Stillwater, MN; and her brother and family, Kevin Tollefson (Lanine Baccam, Satri, Soren) of Frankfurt GE.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. To say I was shocked to hear of Kris’s passing is an understatement. Brian, I am so so sorry for your loss. She was an incredible person who had a way of brining people together. I will miss her visits “home” and the phone call for a quick supper and catch up. She had a way of telling you about her life stories but still keeping you involved. She was a one of a kind. Blessed be her memory.

  2. Upon learning of Kris’ passing, I can’t express my shock and disbelief that she will no longer be with us. I was the leader of the sales and event team at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center in the 90’s. Kris was an integral and key part of our team. Her humor, participation and caring for others made her so valuable and loved by us all. In most recent years I have always enjoyed her Facebook posts where she showed how much she loved and supported her girls, family and Brian. She never failed to exhibit kindness and humor in her retorts to my posts. She was a true farm girl just like my wife, Andrea and Kris and the Tollefson family are salt of the earth. It is said that only the good die young. So true and what a loss for all she touched. Our prayers for comfort and peace for Brian, the girls and all her family and friends. Rest in peace, farm girl.

  3. So sorry to hear of Kris’ passing. As a high school classmate of Kris from the small town of Starbuck, you get to know each other pretty well. I can attest that she was compassionate, caring, funny and talented. In addition to her abilities in choir and band, Kris was one of the top students. But it was her artistic ability left an impression on me. I remember being at David and Eileen’s house as a tag-along little brother when my older sister was taking knitting lessons from Eileen for a 4-H class. I was there passing the time by coloring and trying to stay inside the lines and there was Kris, sitting up to a little table, sketching perfect horses! I think that summed up Kris in my mind. Always in control, steady and smart. Rowan and Erin, you can be very proud of your mom. Even though she is not here, she will never be out of your life. She will always be with you and give you strength your whole life. Brian, Karen, Kevin and Dave, you remain in our thoughts and prayers.

  4. There are no words that are right for any of this to make sense. It was a pleasure to have known Kris, on-on. Big hugs and prayers to the family. Brian you are in my thoughts.
