L. John "Kahuna" Colegrove
September 29, 1947 ~ January 18, 2021
On Monday, January, 18, 2021, L. John “Kahuna” Colegrove, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 73.
John was born on September 29, 1947, in Norfolk, VA to Loren and Muse Colegrove. He received his Master of Education degree from George Mason University and worked his entire career as a teacher, counselor and administrator in Fairfax County Public Schools. On January 25, 1969, he married Janet Woteki and together they raised one beautiful daughter, Elizabeth. Along with Elizabeth, his two grandchildren, John and Jane, were his pride and joy.
John had many passions and hobbies including woodworking, sailing, golf, tennis, reading non-fiction, travelling and spending time with family and friends. He was known for his quick wit, a compassionate spirit and love for babies.
He is survived by his wife Janet, his daughter Elizabeth, his son-in-law David, his grandchildren John and Jane, his ‘brothers’ Tom, Don and George, his ‘sisters’ Cathie and Eileen, his mother-in-law Regina, and several nieces, nephews and ‘apostrophes’.
No service will be held and the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Amyloidosis Foundation at amyloidosis.org.

John and I met at Whittier Intermediate, which I think was his first job (mathematics teacher) in Fairfax County Schools. We quickly became friends and have been all these years. We played basketball for years in a weekly “pick-up” game with colleagues from the school system as well as friends. We played a lot of tennis. He had a quiet confidence and I now reflect on that quality. He read the eulogy at my wife’s funeral service. He was one of my oldest friends and a good guy to be around. I miss you, my old friend

The Colegroves were the first people we met upon moving to OBX. They helped our transition beyond words. It had been so difficult leaving friends of over 30 years. We are forever grateful to have met them. Larry has many fond memories of winning a golf tournament with John as his partner and having spent much time walking Duckwoods golf course over the years. We shared his love of the National Parks. He always offered any advice before we visited a new park. We also shared his love of travel and so enjoyed sharing our stories. I remember being delighted when John was present at FCPS meetings. The reason being he had solutions not complaints. A man of action.
John was such a fine man. We are both so very sad and will sorely miss him. We can only imagine the pain and sorrow you must feel. We send our love.
John will always have a special place in our hearts. His humor and perspective made life so much more intriguing. Sending love and hugs to comfort.
