Leona "Faye" Del Grosso (nee Bowman)

On Monday, May 28, 2012 in Vienna, VA in the presence of her loved ones following a four year battle with metastatic colon cancer. Faye was born in rural Appalachian Virginia in 1926. Following a brief career teaching in one room school houses she moved to Washington D.C. soon after WWII. She met and married Vincent Del Grosso, a Navy Veteran and Naval Research physicist and lived in Southeast D.C. and Fort Washington, MD before moving to Bryantown, MD in 1977. Loving Mother of Alfred (Diana) Del Grosso, Jodi (Richard Heitmann) Del Grosso, Nicholas (Marcy) Del Grosso, Teri (Michael Knoeckel) Van Goethem and Gina (Darren Sands) Del Grosso. Also survived by four grandchildren, Matthew, Stephanie, Adriana and Anthony and soon to be born namesake Leona Faye. Also survived by brothers Noah Bowman of Abingdon, VA, Emerson Bowman of Colorado Springs, CO and several nieces and nephews.

Even while undergoing chemotherapy, Faye managed to be on the go quite a lot in recent years and enjoyed calling many places home including Vienna VA, Southwest D.C. and Marbella, Spain. She was a loving mother, a wonderful cook and was renowned for her eggplant parmesan. Faye made friends wherever she went, in particular at the Katzen Cancer Center at the G.W. Medical Faculty Associates.

Memorial contributions may be made to Katzen Cancer Center of George Washington University or the Christian Appalachian Project, Lexington, KY.

Guestbook

  1. Faye Del Grosso was one of the sweetest people I have ever met. She embodied gentle love and kindness to everyone she knew. The love her children have for her is a testimony to the fact that Faye was a wonderful mother. I have the greatest respect and affection for Faye and her children. She will be missed so very much. We love you, dear sweet lady, dear Faye. Heaven is the richer now because you are there, dwelling in the joy of God’s presence. LORD God, please bring comfort to Faye’s family in their loss. Thank You for letting us know such a lovely person. Amen.

  2. Please accept our condolences on the passing of Faye Del Grosso, mother and grandmother. We had hoped to do this in person, but just three weeks out from surgery I realized I have neither the strength nor stamina to do so. That is the context for this less personal expression. Faye was a wonderful person. Although we did not see each other that often, we always looked forward to our visits. She was warm, modest, and sincere; a pleasure to be with. At a personal level, we are also happy that our shared grandchildren Matt and Steffie got to know her late enough in their young lives so that she will remain a lasting adult memory. Her final years were clouded by disease, which she confronted with dignity and courage. Clearly, she will be missed, but not forgotten. Please accept our most sincere expression of sympathy. 3. Please accept my sincere condolences at the passing of Faye Del Grosso. I was sorry to have to miss the memorial service, but I was out of town. It was my privilege to be among the team at GWU who provided medical care for Mrs. Del Grosso over the last several years and her visits to our office were the highlight of my day. She was an optimistic and cheerful person, whose wonderful attitude and personality was contagious. She always made her caregivers feel better for having known her. She cared deeply about her family and did her best to protect them and keep them safe. She will be greatly missed by all.
