Lionel Morris Griffis, known as “Griff” to many loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2023 at the age of 81, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 ½ years, Flora; daughter, Kimberli Kresslein and her husband, Michael; grandchildren, Xavier and Katarina Kresslein; and sisters-in-law, Mickie Lavis, Rachel Bowman, Ruby Gill and Sherri Mitchem. He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Bertha Griffis of Van, West Virginia, grandson Zachary Aaron Kresslein, and his two best friends and brothers-in-law, John and Paul Mitchem.

Lionel attended Fairfax Baptist Church where he was involved in numerous activities. He served on The Board of Education and was Sunday School Leader for several years. He loved sports, especially golf. He was a member of the Washington Bell Golf Association, for which he served as President and Master of Ceremonies. Lionel also loved his country serving as a Sergeant by the end of his three years in the U.S. Army.

Visitation will be held from at Fairfax Baptist Church located at 10830 Main Street in Fairfax, VA from 11am until the time of service at 11:30am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Fairfax Baptist Church, 10830 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030.
