Lloyd Scott Harbert
March 9, 1953 ~ January 7, 2022
With sadness, we announce the passing of Lloyd Scott Harbert on January 7, 2022 at home in Vienna, VA, at age 67, surrounded by the love of his family and in front of his favorite fireplace. Lloyd was welcomed into heaven by his parents Lois Morgan and William Harbert, his sister, Janet Cheever, and his brother-in-law John Craig.
Lloyd grew up in Idaho and at the age of 10 moved to a farm in Meridian where he learned the value of hard work managing the farm with his brother. They had great memories playing in the canals and caring for the animals and crops. This is where Lloyd began to develop his mischievous and giving spirit, working together and always helping others. Lloyd’s time at the farm instilled in him a great passion for feeding the world which led to start his mission of service around the world.
In almost 40 years with the Foreign Agricultural Service, Lloyd was widely respected for the breadth and depth of his expertise. A graduate of Idaho and Cornell Universities, he was a recognized expert in economics and global agriculture. He fully understood the bigger picture associated with US food and agriculture policies – food distribution, food market development, food safety, and nutrition -- and was especially diligent in balancing competing interests that might otherwise diminish US export opportunities and global food security. In addition to the United Nations, Lloyd served around the world including in Guatemala, London, Hong Kong, Iraq, South Korea, and Mexico. He was engaged in NAFTA and various trade treaties in these and other countries. His work was under seven presidents and, he received various awards from the US and other nations.
He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years Kathleen Craig Harbert, his brother Patrick (Laura) Harbert, children Elliott Scott (Sara) Harbert, Craig Spencer (Laura) Harbert, and Kaitlin Rose Harbert; and three beloved grandchildren Scarlett Rose, Spencer John, and Jonathan Craig. He was a prolific poet, a linguist, and was beloved by many friends, nephews, nieces and in-laws. He lived a very full, generous and productive life.
There will be a celebration of life at a later date where we will share memories and stories of a truly amazing man who changed the lives of so many.
