Louis Magnotti, of Vienna, VA., was born Nov. 15, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY. After basic training at Parris Island, SC and completion of communications school at Camp Del Mar, CA, he was assigned to Weapons Co., 2nd Mar. Div. Camp Lejeune, NC. Upon arrival in Korea in August, 1950 he was assigned as a communicator with the 5th Marine Reg. In September 1950, he participated in Inchon invasion and the capture of Seoul. During the Chosin Reservoir Campaign, he and his comrades made the 78-mile “walk” from Yudam-ni to Hungnam and evacuation by the Navy. Another eight months was spent against enemy forces in south and central Korea before being rotated back to the States as a Sergeant in August 1951. The remainder of his enlistment was spent as an instructor of communications at Quantico, VA.
He received the Korean Service Medal with six Battle Stars, four Presidential Unit Citations, Marine Good Conduct Medal, Korean Presidential Citation and others. Upon discharge, he joined the Metropolitan Police Dept. Washington, DC. He met and married Fayrene Farmer in 1958. In 1961, he transferred to the Secret Service White House Detail and served under presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Because of his background in music he was asked to return to the Met. Police Dept. to serve as Asst. Director of the Met. Police Band until his retirement as a Sergeant in 1970. In his retirement, he wrote the Vienna Town Song “Vienna My Kind of Town” that to this day is played. He also owned and operated his shoe repair shop.
Louis passed away on September, 11, 2017 at his home. He leaves behind his loving wife, Fayrene; son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Christina; cherished grandchildren, Richard (Sabrina), Christopher and Heather; great-grandchildren, Marleigh Kay and Lily Anne. He is predeceased by his son Christopher.
Relatives and friends are invited to Louis’ Life Celebration at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, VA on Saturday, September 16 from 10 AM until time of service at 11 AM. Interment will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Monday, September 18 at 1PM. A funeral procession will promptly leave Money and King at 11: 50 AM.
