After Gene retired from the Navy, she started a floral design business, The Plant Barn, where she provided flowers for private events and commercial businesses in the Washington DC area. She also enjoyed using her decorating skills to create Christmas trees for the Special Olympics charity event for about a decade. In addition, she decorated the altar of her church, St. Luke with flowers, and she sang in the choir for many years.
