  1. My sincere condolences to Doug and the rest of Margarita’s family. I will miss speaking to her as we had been very good friends since high school. She was a loving person and I will miss her. Con carino, Virginia

  2. A VERY GENEROUS INDIVIDUAL. VERY SELFLESS AND PERENNIALLY OPTIMISTIC. A FINE PERSON NONPAREIL!

  3. To the Hodge family, my condolences to you all on your loss which, as I am sure you are seeing, is a loss to so many of us in so many ways. I’ll always remember Hodge’s kindness and gentle demeanor, her friendliness in welcoming me to the NOVA faculty when I came on in 1993. The way she was then is the way she always was, and she will be missed among us.

  4. We pray that Margarita will have peace and comfort knowing she will be in our thoughts and prayers forevermore.

  5. Our sincere condolences to Doug and the rest of the family. Margarita was a walking buddy of ours one summer. She also way a great help to my daughter trying to pass an IB spanish oral exam. But her great big heart, generous personality and 100 watt smile will always be remembered and missed.

  6. Doug and Richie, My prayers for you are that you will know and rest assured that Margarita is in the presence of the Lord and she is now free of pain and suffering. She loved you both so much and was so proud of both of you. You were the great loves of her life. I know life will not be the same without her–she was such a bright light in your lives, as you were in hers. I pray that the Lord Whom she served so joyfully will now comfort you and be with you in your grief. May He now be the Great One to give you “Un abrazo muy fuerte” when you need it. Love, Bobbie

  7. Our thoughts and prayers are with Doug, Richard, and everyone in Margaritas family. Margarita was a beautiful, generous, and talented person. She was a good friend since elementary and high school days in El Paso. Now Margarita is at peace and with God. Sincerely, Bob and Virginia Yatzeck

  8. I was a student of Margarita at NVCC 16 years ago and I think about her regularly. I was saddened to see the obituary in today’s Washington Post and I want you to know that she touched thousands of students like me with her passion for teaching and her vibrant personality. I am very sorry for your loss.

  9. Doug, Richard and Other Family Members, I am deeply saddened to have heard of Margarita’s passing. I’m so sorry that I hadn’t received any notification of her death before today, May 4th, 2009. I was Margaritas’ Doctoral Advisor and Mentor at the University of Maryland, College Park. A friend and former colleague just notified me that she had seen the notice in this past Sunday’s (May 31st) Post. We don’t subscribe to that Paper, so I didn’t see it. I did get a notice a while back about her wanting to hear from me and several other professional acquaintances, so I knew that she was seriously ill. I responded to that request via email, and I addressed my greetings, comments and memories of her directly to Margarita. I’m assuming that a family member or friend read it to her, because she wasn’t in any condition to do that. I take comfort in that, because I wanted her to know that I often thought of her and the WONDERFUL work that she did as my Doctoral student, and the equally wonderful times we had at professional conferences and social events that we attended annually over the years. I often spoke of her drive and energy to other colleagues and students. and I was stunned to hear about her illness. I only wish that I had received word of her passing before today so that I might have personally honored her at her Memorial Service. Since I was not able to do that, let me say here that, Margarita was one of the brightest, kindest and most gentle graduate students that I have had the privilege of teaching and mentoring throughout my 28 years as Director/Coordinator of the Second-Language Education Program at Maryland. She will indeed be sorely missed by her family, friends, and the Profession. Doug and Richard, know that she spoke lovingly and often of both of you every chance she got. I am so happy that I met you both on several occasions. Margarita was indeed a dedicated wife and mother. May God let his light shine upon you both, and in particular, Margarita, and may He hold her in the palm of His hand as she returns “Home” to His Kingdom to await the arrival of her loved ones. With Deep Sympathy and Affection, Bill De Lorenzo Friend, Advisor, Mentor and Professional Colleague

  10. Margarita was by far the most enthusiastic, energetic, generous-spirited, committed, and loving professor I have ever had. She felt like family to me, not only because she treated me like a sister, but because she was from El Paso, Texas, as was my father’s family. When I decided to move to Mexico, Margarita was supportive and positive and invited me to tell the class, in Spanish of course, about my personal journey. She was keenly interested in all her students and in the Spanish language. She shared her resources–both electronic (which I still share with others) and print–her smiles, her embraces, and her dreams. I will never forget her loving kindness.
