Marlyn Kay (Shaffer) Payne April 21, 1941 – January 27, 2022 Marlyn passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 27, 2022. She touched many lives throughout her 80 years and will be remembered most for her patience, kind heartedness and gentle spirit.

She was born in Masontown, West Virginia to Milford “Paul” and Bernice (Radabaugh) Shaffer. After graduating from Parkersburg High School in West Virginia, she got a job as a telephone operator for Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company in Arlington, VA where she met her husband, Wayne Payne. They were married on March 16th and celebrated over 50 years together before her passing.

Work brought them to Oklahoma in the late sixties where they finally settled in Mustang. She continued working as a teacher/Assistant Director for the Mustang Methodist Pre-School while also raising their children. After their graduation, she moved back to Virginia in the early nineties to help care for her in-laws and be closer to her aging mother. After almost 10 years there, they returned to Mustang to be closer to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, working the daily Wordscapes puzzle with her husband, and her daily political phone calls with her sister, Judi. Most importantly, she loved bragging on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marlyn is preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Crystal Renee Payne and nephew, Gary Robinson. She is survived by her husband, Wayne, son, Michael Payne (Nicole) of Mustang; daughter, Lori Reeves (Chris) of Little Elm, TX; brother, Paul Shaffer, Jr. (Carolyn); sister, Judith Combs (John); 10 grandchildren, Cody Reeves (Meagan), Destiny Sanderson (Nathan), Dalton Reeves, Derek Newell (Devyn), Aubrey Payne (Logan Sellers), Ethan Rush, Garrett Payne, Bradyn Reeves, Cooper Reeves and Braxon Payne; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Tobias and Adelynne Sanderson, Ryker and Navey Newell; Colton Reeves; 7 nieces and nephews; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews and friends she considered “family.”

Services will be at the Mustang United Methodist Church on Friday, February 4, 2022, at 2pm. Burial at Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Vienna, Virginia on Thursday, February 10th at 12noon . In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Mustang United Methodist Church or New Beginnings Family Church of Mustang in her memory.
