Mary Ann Philipp

Mary Ann Philipp, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on December 26, 2021. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 8, 1946 to Edmund Wiertelak, a Chicago police officer, and his wife, Carolyn, a schoolteacher. She graduated from the University of Illinois and met her future husband Bob Philipp while a student. In 1970 the couple moved to Northern Virginia with their two young children.
While her children were young, Mary Ann taught exercise classes through the Fairfax County Recreation Department. She then had a 20-year career with Fairfax County Office for Children, serving as Director of the School-Age Child Care program at Spring Hill Elementary in McLean. Mary Ann was a 50-year member of Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean. During those years, she served as a Ruling Elder, Clerk of Session, and a member of many committees. She taught church school for more than four decades and was a founding member of a church social group that has met monthly for 50 years. Mary Ann delighted in her church, her Polish heritage, her left-handedness, the Chicago White Sox, and children, all children, but especially her three grandsons.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Robert D. Philipp; her daughter, Ruth Philipp Baxley and her husband John of Arlington, Virginia and their sons, Jack and Will; and her son, Thomas Philipp, his wife Anne and their son, John, of Birmingham, Alabama. She is also survived by her brother, Jim Wiertelak of Lonoke, Arkansas and two nieces.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, 1724 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va 22101, on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM
