MARY CATHERINE KINDLEY

(1926-2013)

Surrounded by loving family, Mrs. Mary Catherine Kindley, of Potomac Falls, VA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Reston Hospital. A native Washingtonian, Mary was born at Old Providence Hospital on Feb. 11, 1926. Mary attended Holy Comforter Elementary and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy. She received a Bachelors Degree in Education from Wilson Teacher's College.

Mary met the love of her life, Capt. Lee M. Kindley, in 1946. They were married on August 23, 1947, and made their first home in Baltimore, MD, where Lee worked as a research chemist. Mary and Lee later settled in Springfield, VA, where they lived for 27 years and raised their two children, Catherine and George.

Mrs. Kindley taught Business Education at Robert E. Lee High School in Fairfax County Public Schools for 13 years. She was a devoted wife and mother who supported her husband, Lee, while he worked as a chemist, served in the Army Reserve, and earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry from George Washington University. After they retired, the couple moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where they spent 15 years enjoying the warm weather, traveling, and visiting with friends and family. Mary and Lee moved back to Northern VA in 1999, settling at Falcon's Landing Retirement Community. Mary was a voracious reader who also loved playing card games, Scrabble, watching movies, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a kind and generous person who cared deeply for her family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, George Daniel Mack and her mother, Catherine Cecilia Mack. Mary is survived by her husband, Col. Lee M. Kindley, age 92, also of Potomac Falls, VA, her daughter, Catherine Kindley McKeown (partner Richard), of Knoxville, TN and her son, George Murray Kindley (Edna), of Fairfax, VA. She is also survived by grandson, Daniel Lee McKeown (Jennifer), of Morristown, TN, granddaughter, Kristen Kindley Wabuge (George), from Alexandria, VA, and grandson, Kevin Kindley, of Norfolk, VA. Mary was also the beloved great-grandmother of Simone Wabuge of Alexandria, VA.

A memorial service to honor Mary will be held in the chapel at Falcons Landing, 20522 Falcons Landing Circle, Potomac Falls, VA, on Monday, July 29, 2013, at 2PM. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Capital Caring. By mail: Attn: Capital Caring

  1. My grandmother Mary whom I called Grammy, was such a sweet, smart, and caring lady. She taught me so many things from my love of shrimp and Caesar salads to how to play many different card games and puzzles. I will always remember her lovingly. -Kevin
