Mary Catherine Privett Hancock

November 6, 1924 ~ February 9, 2012
Mrs. Hancock, 87, passed away peacefully on February 9th at the Dogwood Village of Orange County, VA. Mary Catherine will be fondly and forever remembered as a devoted wife, mother, sister, and generous friend and neighbor. She was born November 6, 1924, in Portsmouth, VA, to the late Lemuel, Jr. and Jennie Bumgarner Privett. In July of 1946 she married, Robert V. Hancock. Together they settled in Vienna, VA in 1952, where she was active in the community and the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. In 1961, Mary Catherine joined Fairfax County Public Schools as a school bus driver and served for 21 years transporting children in the Vienna area. After Robert's passing in 1995, and 50 years in Vienna, she moved to Orange, VA in 2002.
Mary Catherine touched the lives of all she met with her giving and loving ways. She was well known for her love of animals and often took in strays of all kinds. She was a member of the Vienna Lioness Club and served on the Fairfax County Public Schools Transportation Committee as a bus driver representative. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by her children, Robert of Crawford, CO, Rowland of Orange, VA, and John of South Riding, VA; grandchildren Lemuel and his wife Jessica Ponton, McCanna, Campbell, Zachary, James, and Emily; daughters-in-law Sheila Donnelly and Donna Hancock; her brother Thomas Rowland Privett and sister-in-law Catherine Privett; nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and the many friends she made along the way. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years and an older brother, Lemuel Privett III.
Family and friends are welcome at the Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Avenue West, Vienna, on February 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18th at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary Catherine's name to your favorite charity.

May the thoughts and prayers of the many friends who love you, give you peace and comfort. God bless you and Mrs. Hancock.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.
As a friend of John Hancock, we offer our sincere condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are for Mary Hancock and with the Hancock family. God Bless
To all of Mary Catherine’s family, Bob Jr., Rowland & John & their families. I was always treated as one of the family. Bob Sr. was the reason I was able to join the Vienna Vol. Fire Dept back in 1964. Bob Sr. & Mary really filled many gaps that were missing from my own family as far as my young adult life was concerned. All three boys also gave me that feeling of being welcomed into their home. My very best to everyone & I am sure all the good times will be remembered. Bill & Susan Fogerty
Im very sorry for your loss! I had told her that i would come to have lunch with her sometime, but unfortunatly that didn’t happen. I did think of doing that often, but things always seemed to get in the way. I hope she forgives me. I will see her again one day, i know, and i will do it then if we eat in heaven. I hope so since she loved to eat. (so do I) sincerely, michelle
