Maryann Long Skinner of Vienna, Virginia died October 22, 2024, at home. She was born on 28 July 1945 in Sharon, Pennsylvania to James Cozby and Irene Lasko Long. She was raised in Birmingham, Alabama where she graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1962. After high school she attended Auburn University where she graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in math by the age of 21.
She worked in the aerospace industry in the Washington, DC area and in Los Angeles where she met and married Richard W. Skinner in 1987. They spent most of their marriage in Vienna where they raised their only child, Jane.
Maryann’s passion did not lay with her work, but with retirement. In her nearly 25 years of retirement she pursued dozens of hobbies. She traveled extensively and made friends wherever she went. Maryann loved art and studied mosaics, stained glass, tiles, oils, and pastels. She was especially passionate about genealogy, local history, and archaeology. It was her greatest pride that her daughter became an archaeologist.
She also enjoyed being involved in her neighborhood. Halloween and Easter were her favorite holidays in the neighborhood. For Easter she would set up an egg hunt for kids of all ages.
Maryann died surrounded by loved ones on October 22, 2024, after a short battle with bile duct cancer. She is survived by her husband, Col. Richard Wayne Skinner, her daughter, Jane Cozby Skinner (Vienna, VA), sister, Margaret Long Shaver (Col. Jeffrey Shaver; Wynnewood, PA), cat, Pompey, and numerous siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. If you are so moved, direct memorials to your local historical or genealogical society.
What a great lady/neighbor. Your beautiful smile and great disposition were so admired. I will miss you and will surely miss your notes and cards from Michigan Trips—-they always warmed my heart. Rest in peace my friend. Hugs to Rick and Jane. Fondly Barbara Voorheis.
Maryann always welcomed us with a smile and her cheerfulness and upbeat look on life was shared with all. She was a long time friend to my sister and the Moulton family providing support to everyone over the many years we new her. She will be missed.
Loved her holiday spirit designed to delight the kids in the neighborhood. She was a friend who welcomed us to the neighborhood and a model of strength and resiliency. She will be missed.
