Mathew J. Mathews

Mathew J. Mathews passed away peacefully at his home on February 3, 2015. He was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on December 9, 1924 to Ivan and Maria Matev. He left Bulgaria in 1951, and became an American citizen in 1960. After a career with the government he retired to Great Falls, Virginia. He is survived by his brother Boris, by Catherine, his wife of 58 years, his daughter Margaret of New York, his son Stuart and daughter-in-law Pamela of Boston, and four grandchildren, Erica, Charles, Christopher, and Robson. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 9220 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, Virginia 22066, on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers gifts may be made to St. Francis Church for its national and international Outreach programs. There will also be a Memorial Service at St. Mark's Orthodox Church, 7124 River Road, Bethesda, Maryland 20817 at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers gifts may be made to St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, 575 Scarsdale Road, Yonkers, New York 10707.

Life with Mathew was always an adventure. From Boy Scouts and Intercontinental swimming to baby pine trees and a house in the country, so many wonderful memories. We feel privileged that we were able to share a bit of our lives with you. We miss you. Kate, David and Susie
Matt always had a special place in my heart. He “gave me away” at my wedding and I shall always have fond memories of him. My heartfelt condolences to CAtherine and his family.
