Mayo became my good friend and an invaluable source for Vienna history while I served as the Town’s Public Information Officer from 1977 to 2010. Over the years I referred countless people to him, many trying to track down information about family members who had lived in Vienna, and he was always so gracious and helpful to them all. The Town has lost a good friend.
Dear Anne and Family, We were so saddened to learn of your father’s passing yesterday. You and all of your loved ones will be foremost in our thoughts. I will always treasure the memories my Parents have of your Dad. To hear of their Agency Carpool Adventures – – brought smiles. May our continual prayers bring each of you – – eventual peace. All our love, Peter, Robyn G. Buckley-Riebling, Jennifer, & Kimberly (daughter of Elizabeth A. Buckley & Robert D. Buckley)

Anne and Brad, we are so sorry about the loss of your wonderful father. Please know that your family is in our prayers. Love, Rita and Larry Robertson
Mayo will be greatly missed. I was privileged to know him and appreciated his help from his vast knowledge of history. He was a true Southern Gentleman.
Dear Connie and family: What wonderful memories when Miss Betty Styles introduced us so many years ago now…in Falls Church, VA. Today, Page Styles, the wife of Michael Styles, emailed me about Mayo’s passing…What a truly wonderful life he had and with so many contributions as well…My thoughts are with you Connie, and children…Most sincerely, Jim Boren.
We have lost a wonderful leader and resource. His good works will live on.
Connie I have fond memories of Mayo, you and your family growing up. It was always a treat to visit Mayo & family at Merry-Go-Round. Connie, I am sorry for your loss. Mayo will be fondly remembered by me, Dad, Mom & Barbara. Dad & Mom have fond memories of Mayo & you at the bridge club.
Mike and family. I was sorry to hear about your dads passing. Saw him earlier this year at the Fairfax Legion at a memorial service for Lehman Young. We had a good conversation, and I was filled in on what you were doing. May he rest in peace.
I’ll never forget when several of us (within the HMDL group) asked Mayo to show us where Hunter Mill used to be located just a few years ago. Mayo insisted on walking the land with us and it was a laborious chore for us (younger guys) to keep up with him. Always a class act and happy to chat. He taught me a lot. Just wish I had met him earlier in my life.
Please accept my sincere condolences. I was a young officer just starting my CIA career when I encountered Mayo toward the end of his CIA career. He was a true gentlemen and always ready to share his knowledge and insights with others. He was an excellent example to we younger (then) officers.
I was privileged to serve with Mayo in the Washington office of our Agency division from 1968 to 1970. Mayo was unfailingly gracious, kind and helpful to me. If memory serves, Mayo was S2 in the Alamo Scouts: The Alamo Scouts (U.S. 6th Army Special Reconnaissance Unit) was a reconnaissance unit of the Sixth United States Army in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. The unit is best known for its role in liberating American prisoners of war (POWs) from the Japanese Cabanatuan POW camp near Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, Philippines in January 1945 (from Wikipedia). As Rex noted above, Mayo was one of the Greatest Generation, a charter member.
My condolences for Mayo’s passing, with my deep thanks for the service, dedication and help he provided many over the years as shared his love and enthusiasm for local history. Richard Bierce, A.I.A (FFX county Architectural Review board)
Aloine and I want to express our sincere condolences to Connie and the Stuntz Family. I was a member of Mayo’s Usher Team at VPC and we always looked forward to our week. Mayo had a heart attack shortly after I had mine and we commiserated together at the diet restricions we had to accept. Mayo loved VPC and he was loved by all his many friends. We have both of his books which help us remember him. Sincerely, Charles and Arloine Hood
We are deeply saddened by your loss. Please accept our heartfelt condolences. Many of us at Access Services library had the privilege of working with Mr. Stuntz when he facilitated the support group meetings at VIP PH. His leadership at these monthly meetings provided valuable support to the members coping with vision loss. Mr. Stuntz will be greatly missed.
Dear Connie and family, I am so honored to have been a friend of Mayo’s for many, many years. I just learned of his passing. I truly loved him, as a wonderful man that always had a smile and something nice to say. He will not be forgotten. Anne Oliver Abbott
To the wonderful Stuntz family… Mayo was one of those kinetic persons whose curiosity, passion and commitment for community and family, made everyone he touched a believer that it is good to be here, even when the physical pains should have crushed that spirit. He just kept adapting and contributing. Through all of you is his and Connie’s best work because you all excel at extensive community service and, meaningful friendships. Just thinking or saying “Mayo” is now code to break out into a big smile!
I am so sorry. We have lost a wonderful person and he will be missed.
Our prayers are with you.
