Michael Gene Rhodes

michael rhodes
Michael Gene Rhodes, age 54, of Vienna Virginia passed away on December 25, 2022 after a long, valiant battle against cancer. He was born, raised and resided in Vienna where he grew up playing baseball, football and lacrosse for VYI and Madison High School.

Michael was an active and generous member in his community. A Vienna resident and local business owner, his true passion was coaching youth and high school sports. For over 30 years, Coach Rhodes was a fixture at football, lacrosse and softball athletic fields, mainly Madison High School and Waters field. Michael considered himself fortunate to be back on the same fields he had played on decades before. His countless hours of instruction and support positively influenced the lives of many young men and women in our community.

Michael was a devoted husband, attentive father and friend to many. He spent hours strategizing for and recapping games with his fellow coaches, gathering and laughing with his close circle of friends, and building memories with his family. Beach trips and golf outings were among his favorite pastimes and he shared these moments with the ones he loved. He gave with selfless conviction in all facets of his life. Michael will be remembered for his many personal contributions across the community, but everyone will remember the delivery of his witty comments and humorous facial expressions.

He is survived by his wife Michelle Hall Rhodes, his two sons Jacob Michael Rhodes and Joshua Daniel Rhodes, his parents Brenda Hoffman and Charles Campbell, his three half siblings Jason Campbell, Melissa Rhodes and Matthew Rhodes and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Michelle Barr and half sister Chasity Rhodes.

Funeral services will be held at Vienna Presbyterian Church - 124 Church Street Vienna, VA On Friday January 6, 2023 at 1 PM with a reception to follow at the Vienna Firehouse Flame Room

- 400 Center Street Vienna, VA. Burial Services will take place on Saturday January 7, 2023 at 10:00 am at National Memorial Park - 7482 Lee Hwy Falls Church, VA 22042.

  1. We are blessed to have known Michael and will miss him deeply. Michelle, Jacob and Josh, you are in our prayers and we are here to help you through this difficult time. God Bless you all

  2. Q: What will you miss most about Michael?

A: His witty humor! I will never forget when a group of us went to Seven springs, PA and we were drinking bud light and Michael kept leaving his tops all over the place! I kept nagging him about cleaning them up and low and behold a few weeks after we got back home, I got a nice little letter in the mail with a bunch of bud light caps taped to the paper! I never laughed so hard in my life! What a great guy!
    You will be missed!
    RIP

    • OMG, that is absolutely AWESOME!!!?
Thanks so so so so much for sharing that hilarious story…damnit…crying again..?

    • To say Mike was a great guy is a serious understatement. Mike was on my brother’s Vienna lax team that my dad and John Dodd coached in the 80’s. Mike always said my dad moved him off defense and he was so happy about it. Talk about full circle. Michael and Michelle were a huge part of our VYI memories. Mike always had a kind word for my boys and they looked up to him. He taught them to love being a part of a team and I credit his influence on them choosing to play football and lax in high school at Oakton. We loved running into Coach Rhodes over the years – usually at 7-11! Mike was very gracious in moving my 100- year-old grandmother to Oakton. He led a life of purpose – one of presence, charity, and commitment. God Bless, you all. Michelle, we know that you have lost your other half. Josh and Jacob, you will survive this. God and your community will get you through these next phases of healing, but nothing will replace such a stellar guy. We mourn his loss. A mass is being said for Mike at St Leo’s Catholic Church on Monday, March 13th at the 6:15 am mass.
