With great sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfaher, Michael Joseph Mussomeli, age 76. Mike lost his courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, July 21 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born on September 14, 1935 in New York City, the youngest of ten children born to the late Rosario and Josephine Mussomeli. He attended New york City public schools and graduated from high school in 1953. After graduation, he enlisted in the army and spent two years serving his country while stationed in Europe. He was hornorably discharged and returned to New York City, enrolled in community college and worked at Cartier Jewelers on 5th Ave, where he met the love of his life, Loraine Cheetham Mussomeli. They were married on April 23, 1961 and moved to Washington, D.C. for Mike to become a police officer with the Washington, D. C. Police Department. Mike retired from the police department after twelve years of service. He then worked for 19 years in security with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, retiring in 1998. During retirement Mike enjoyed reading and Sudoku, playing golf, especially with his buddies, Sam, John and Bob; spending time at his grandchildren's school and sporting events, and spending vacations at the beach with his family in Florida, on the Outer Banks and in Sandbridge. His family was his proudest accomplishment and he remained until the end a lving husband and devoted father; a caring son, brother, uncle and a very proud grandfather.

Loraine and family, Without any of our own family living in the area, you have been our family away from home for nearly 20 years. We have so many fond memories of sharing holidays and other special moments with you. Mike was so much a part of making us feel welcome. So, it is with heavy hearts, but great memories that we extend our thoughts and prayers to each of you.
Our sincere condolences to family.
Sincere condolences to all of you. He was a great man with many special memories that you will hold in your hearts forever. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Dear Mussomeli Family, I was sad to learn this evening of the death of an old friend. I worked at the Teamsters Union when Mike first came there and frequently hung out with him until he retired. He was, in my opinion, a wonderful man and it was a pleasure to have known him. I will continue to keep him in my prayers. Sincerely,
Dear Lorraine and family, We were so sad to learn of Mike’s passing. He was a dear friend of our father. We’ll always remember going to the World’s Fair (’64!!) in NYC with your family & meeting the extended family. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Love, Carolyn, Arlene and Kenny
I first knew Mike at Our Lady of Good Counsel where our children attended school in the late 70’s. Mike was instrumental in beginning the girls’ basketball program at OLGC and I was his counter-part for the boys’ program. We shared many moments in the old gymnasium (the original OLGC Church). I always enjoyed Mike for his love of youth, his competitive spirit, his infectious smile and his good friendship. Loraine, and all of his children and grandchildren, have a special intermediary in Heaven who, I am certain, will always pray for them. Mike is a special person and we will miss him. RIP – John and Laurie Brandt
Lorraine: I am so glad that I had the chance to play golf last year with Mike and renew old friendships. My best to you and the family in this moment of grief and remembrances.
Dear Mussomeli family, Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to your family. Jeff and Lori
Lorraine, I am so sorry to hear of your husband’s passing. I hope it is some comfort to you to know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Sue Housholder ( friend from Curves)
I am so sorry for your loss. I have vivid memories of Mr. Mussomeli: his helping John and I craft skim boards, the numerous trips to football practice and showing me the ropes, driving me down to OC with you guys in the big blue wagon – taking us to Wetzel’s. I struggle to remember details of my life from last week but I still have clear positive memories of Mr. Mussomeli as if he were coaching yesterday, I remember his passion. My prayers are with you all: Robert Barr
