Muriel H. Webb

MURIEL EMMA (HINSON) WEBB
1927 – 2018
Born June 4th, 1927 in New York City and passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 12th, 2018 in Fairfax, VA. Muriel was the daughter of William Jerome Hinson and Nora (Barker) Hinson. Following graduation from Mount Holyoke College, she married her West Point beau, LT William (Bill) Loyd Webb, Jr. on Dec 27, 1947. Thus began a marriage of 70 years and a life of world travel with 35 years of service to the country.
Her story of love, challenge, and resilience is typical of military families of that era. First assigned to Japan, Muriel gave birth to two sons. When Bill deployed to combat in Korea, Muriel remained in Tokyo, tended to her two babies, and then helped Bill with his recovery when he was wounded and evacuated. Subsequent duties included three tours in West Germany, one in South Korea, and many throughout the US, with her daughters being born in that period. In 1968 she watched her sons enter West Point together, and a week later Bill headed to Vietnam, leaving a worried but sturdy Muriel alone with two young daughters and a horse. When Bill returned, they moved to West Point where Muriel was an always-ready friend and hostess to her cadet sons, their classmates, and any dates needing a place to stay. Muriel was a gracious first lady when Bill commanded a squadron, a cadet regiment, and an armored division, mentoring and encouraging countless young spouses around the world. They built their final home in Vienna, VA after Bill retired. As grandchildren started appearing, she adopted the endearing German title of Oma.
Her life was one of commitment to country and uncomplaining and unselfish service despite the hardships of few roots and a dangerous world. By the time they settled in Vienna, Muriel had established 27 homes, lived 14 years overseas, raised four children who love her dearly, and was mom to myriad dogs and cats and a horse. As a reminder of her valuable role as a military wife, one of her favorite quotes was from John Milton: “They also serve who only stand and wait,” which she did with elegance, compassion, and courage. Muriel loved her Lord, her beloved husband and family, our great country, animals of all types, teaching young people to read and swim, the ocean, Germany, Christmas carols, the West Point class of 1947, and walks in the woods. She always enjoyed visits from friends and family and sitting on her deck watching her birds. She had 90 years of love, adventure, and grace. Muriel was predeceased by her brothers William J. Hinson and George B. Hinson. She is survived by her husband Major General (R) William L. Webb, Jr. of Vienna, her children Colonel (R) George Webb (Rita) of Topeka, KS; Colonel (R) William Webb III (Kay) of Huntsville, AL; Lucinda Webb of Reston, VA; and Alicia Webb of Carolina Beach, NC. She has eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Oma was loved dearly by all of them. A memorial service is scheduled for 21 Feb at 2:30 pm at Fort Myer, VA Memorial Chapel. I loved talking with Mrs. Webb when she and her husband would come in the office. I kept up with her through Alicia for a long time. She was a dear person and a joy to know. Love to Alicia, Lucinda and Genl Webb. Sally Bitner
Mom as I affectionately called her was a beautiful woman both inside and outside. She was an incredibly kind and a generous person. Mom, I still have the pin with 1000 angels which you gave me to protect me during my surgery and recovery. I miss our afternoon walks around the neighborhood. I will cherish all of the great times we had together. Mom, I miss you, till we meet again, bye and sleep well.
My mother asked me just a few months ago if I thought she would go to heaven. There is no doubt of her faithfulness to our God that she has been blessed with His promise. She now lives peacefully in His kingdom of everlasting life. All joy is with mom as she watches over us here on earth until we meet again.
