Born in:
Brooklyn, New York
Resided in:
Vienna, Virginia
Nilda Nixon, of Vienna, VA, died on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at her home. She was 77. Nilda was born to Santiago and Esther Gonzalez in Brooklyn, New York, on the day after Christmas in 1945. The holiday remained her favorite throughout her life. Her love of the Dodgers was lasting despite both her and the team moving away from New York.
In New Orleans, she graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School and Loyola University, where she made lifelong friends.
As a hearings and appeals analyst for the government, she worked at various offices throughout the country, meeting and marrying her husband, Joe, in Chicago in 1968. They vacationed in Europe before settling down in Northern VA, first in McLean, and then in Vienna, where she was a vibrant part of the community. After finding out that her first-born daughter, Linda, had autism, she worked part time to be actively involved in assisting Linda with her special needs.
A lifelong learner, Nilda was an avid reader, collected maps, and volunteered through the Shepherd’s Center as well as participated in the Adventures in Learning program.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; her sister, Julie; and two daughters, Linda and Holly. The rite of Catholic mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna, VA, on October 12 at 11 a.m.
