Norma Vermillion
February 23, 1928 ~ April 15, 2012
On Sunday, April 15, 2012. Wife of the late Russell G. Vermillion, survived by children Eric (Linda), Mark (Lynda), and Julia, grandchildren Mark II, Jennifer, and James; brother Fred Rogers (Mary Lee) of Michigan; sisters Maxine Harwood (Jim) of Ohio and Beverly Feick of Florida and many nieces & nephews. Born Feb. 23, 1928 in Akron, Ohio, Norma graduated from Copley High School in 1946. She attended classes at Akron University before marrying Russ in 1949. She supported her husband as an Army Officer's wife during his 26 year career and did volunteer work with the American Red Cross and various Base activities while stationed at various military installations and assignments in the US and France. She served as Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader and was active in various school PTA activities while her children were in school. After settling in Springfield, Virginia in 1969 she founded the Springfield Needlecrafters in 1970 and served as their leader for over 16 years teaching and promoting needlecraft arts. She also volunteered with Nelly's Needlers at Woodlawn Plantation for over 16 years helping to raise funds for the upkeep of the mansion. A columnist for the local Springfield Independent Newspaper for four years, she was also an active member of the National League of American Pen Women. She was also a founding member of the first chapter (Potowmack) of the Virginia Wildflower Preservation Society, which later became the Virginia Native Plant Society. She served them as Vice President and newsletter editor as well as various program chairs. Her love of plants also saw her volunteer for 14 years with the Fairfax County Extension Plan Clinic, helping people solve their plant problems. Norma also served in the West Springfield Civic Association for over 20 years in various positions, including two years as President. Her active involvement helped to revive the organization, reinstitute and activate the Neighborhood Watch program, and produce numerous editions of the extensive community directory. Her numerous community activities led to her selection as one of 18 Outstanding Community Leaders in Fairfax County honored by being nominated to the Lord & Lady Fairfax Court by the county's Board of Supervisors, where she was chosen from the group as Lady Fairfax for 1987. She continued her community activities until health issues no longer permitted. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to be made in her name to Nelly's Needlers at Woodlawn Plantation (www.woodlawn1805.org) or the Potowmack Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society (www.vnps-pot.org) as these were organizations she loved and supported for many years.

My husband Bruce and I both graduated from high school with Norma. We had a lot of fun there. We visited the family in VA and have kept touch for most of these years. It has been a good time in history. Farewell. Martha (Boss)and Bruce Bridgeman
My cousin Norma was very kind to our family as was her husband Russ. She was very supportive to those who had disabilities such as my daughter Mary Carmen. I will always appreciate the kindness and caring.
