Odette Myers (Kiyohara) Long
On September 14, 2015, Odette Long of Centreville, VA, beloved wife of Bruce B. Long, died surrounded by her family after a long, courageous battle with multiple myeloma.
She was born August 20, 1951, the daughter of Otis and Nellie Myers, and raised in Chamblee, GA. Odette graduated from West Oahu College in Hawaii as valedictorian with a BA in Psychology in 1982 and summa cum laude from the University of Missouri with an MA in Psychology in 1984.
Odette accompanied her first husband, Ikuo Kiyohara, during his 20-year Army career, including overseas assignments in Japan and Hawaii, and at numerous Army posts in the United States. Her first marriage ended in divorce.
Odette served as an adjunct instructor for the University of Maryland in Japan and at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, VA. An adult learning expert, Odette concentrated on educational design and, instructional methods, leadership
and organizational development. She was employed at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), in Falls Church, VA, for 19 years, and at her death was serving as Senior Principal, Talent and Diversity. A skilled communicator and facilitator, Odette was often chosen to address challenging organizational issues and was most proud when she achieved collaborative solutions. Throughout her career at CSC, she was known as a friend and mentor to many.
Odette was a contributing member of Oakton Methodist United Church for many years, participating in its leadership, fellowship and educational programs. Odette adopted Hawaii as her favorite place and embraced the music, language and culture while she lived there. She loved music, played the piano, and enjoyed singing with and accompanying her daughters in vocal and instrumental performance. She was easygoing, patient, generous and kind to all, devoted to and beloved by her family and friends, and known for her laugh that made everyone smile.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, and is survived by her devoted husband of 10 years, Bruce; her sister, Ruth (Henry) Hisaw of Columbia, S, C.; her daughters, Jennifer (Chris) Hasty of Virginia Beach, VA, and Lisa (Michael) Paquette of Herndon, VA; her stepdaughters, Amy Long of Reston, VA, and Polly (Michael) Foote of Williamsburg, VA, and her grandchildren Matthew Hasty, Amanda Hasty and Katie Waldbaum.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Friday, Sept 18, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 West Maple Ave in Vienna, VA. A celebration of Odette's life will be held Saturday, Sept 19 at 2 pm at Oakton United Methodist Church, 2951 Chain Bridge Road in Oakton, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Odette's name be made to Oakton United Methodist Church.
