Patricia Ann Levins

Patricia “Pat” Ann Levins (née Mooney) of Vienna, Virginia, died at home on April 28, 2025 following a short illness after a life of service and devotion to her family, her faith, and her community.

Pat was born in Rocky River, Ohio in 1939 to Frank Joseph Mooney, Jr. and Gertrude Bossong Mooney. The middle of three children and only daughter. She loved her childhood along the shores of Lake Erie, skating on the lake in the winter and spending the summer swimming and sailing at the Cleveland Yachting Club. When she was a teenager, her family relocated to Bristol, Tennessee for her father’s work. Since there were no Catholic high schools in Tennessee at that time, Pat finished high school at Nazareth Academy in Nazareth, Kentucky. A history lover her entire life, she attended Saint Louis University earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in American History.

After graduating, she worked on Capitol Hill, serving both her adopted and birth states, first as an aide to Representative Jimmy Quillen of Tennessee, and later as a legislative assistant to Representative Chuck Whalen from Ohio. The Whalen girls, as they called themselves, continue to meet up for lunches and stay in touch–one of many groups Pat joined and held dear to her heart until the end.

Nothing was more important to Pat than family. Pat met the love of her life, Mike, when playing bridge, a passion they continued to share all their life. They were married in 1973 in Washington, DC and honeymooned on Martha’s Vineyard and Nova Scotia. Soon after they bought their house in Vienna, Virginia, where they spent their entire lives together. Their daughter, Maureen, was born in 1976, followed by their son, Mike, in 1978.

Pat loved to travel within the United States and around the world, instilling that love in her children, and, it seemed to them, insisting they stop at every historical marker that they came across. By the time her children graduated high school, they had been to 44 of the 50 states thanks to amazing driving tours around the country.

During her children’s childhood, Pat taught at Epiphany Preschool for many years and served as president of the St. Mark parish council, the Westbriar Elementary PTA and the Cinnamon Creek Homeowners Association. She and two friends led the Cinnamon Creek community effort to successfully challenge the Fairfax County precedent that only new roads could have sound barriers, leading to their installation along the Dulles Toll Road when it was built.

Pat was dedicated to helping others wherever she could. She was an active member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church before joining the PAX Catholic community and tirelessly volunteered extensively around the DC area. Pat aided the Sisters of Mercy in their missionary work, fed and clothed the needy at the Queen of Peace Matthew 25 free store and food bank, and entertained seniors with her piano talents playing popular tunes from her youth. She loved music, particularly Scott Joplin rags, Dixieland jazz, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Irish folk songs, and silly kids’ songs she sang with her grandchildren.

When her grandchildren arrived, she spent as much time as she could with them playing all sorts of imaginative games and joyfully attending their graduations, plays, games, and other events. Her love of family extended to close friends who she adopted like family–she was claimed as a surrogate mother by many of her friends’ children to whom she never forgot to send birthday cards that always arrived magically on the day of their birthday.

Pat was a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, an amazing friend, an avid Bridge player, a reader of varied books until the end, a lover of Impressionist art and a great fan of all sports but especially college sports. Flowers, especially orchids and irises, were very special to her. Her house was always decorated with live and cut flowers, inside and out. She touched countless lives in big and small ways, sharing her signature smile, humor, and caring heart–like her flowers, she helped so many people bloom.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her brother William (Bill) Mooney, and her sister-in-law Sharon Mooney. She is survived by her husband, B. Michael Levins, her children Maureen Yacobucci (Brent) of Arlington, VA and Michael “Mike” Levins (Nisha Sanjurjo) of Fort Myers, FL, her grandchildren, Ayden Yacobucci, Behati Sanjurjo, and Liam Levins, her brother Neil Mooney of Bristol, TN and many biological and adopted nieces, nephews and grands.

Donations to Matthew 25, a free store at Our Lady of Queen of Peace where Pat volunteered, or the Our Lady Queen of Peace food bank, would be greatly appreciated.

Honorary Pallbearers are her son-in-law, Brent Yacobucci, nephews Ray Mooney, David Mooney and Kevin Mooney, godson Greg Colson, and family friends John Crotteau, Anthony Minella and Jordan Minella.
