Dr. Patricia A. O'Donnell, 71, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. She was born on June 25, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, the eldest daughter of Dr. Charles H. O'Donnell, M.D. and Alice (Lambe) O'Donnell. She is a graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (1962), The University of Detroit (BA SW, 1966), The University of Michigan (MSW, 1971) and The Catholic University of America (PhD Ethics, 1998).
Dr. O'Donnell began her career in 1966 in Detroit doing case management at the Wayne County, Michigan Juvenile Court. She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1972, and worked with Children's Amputee Services at the District of Columbia General Hospital. She accepted a position as a social worker at the Georgetown University Medical Center in 1977. Finally, in 1991 she began working at Inova Hospital System, where she retired as the Director of the Center of Ethics in 2013. In addition, she taught at the National Catholic School of Social Services of The Catholic University of America from 1997 through 2012.
Dr. O'Donnell enjoyed family, travel, genealogy, cooking, gardening and reading. She was ever loving and well-loved and will be greatly missed.
Dr. O'Donnell is survived by her nine siblings, Maureen O'Donnell (George Kuetemeyer), Kathleen Ellis (Stephen), Daniel O'Donnell (Lynn), John O'Donnell (Holly), James O'Donnell (Linda), Michael O'Donnell (Sherry); Dr. Philip O'Donnell (Linda); Robert O'Donnell (Beth); and Hugh O'Donnell (Karen). She is also survived by twenty four nieces and nephews, as well as numerous grand-nieces and nephews. Dr. O'Donnell is survived by a great many friends, including her best friend, Veronica Flynn.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 2 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Avenue W, Vienna, Virginia, and a Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 3 at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, Virginia.
A wake will be held on Friday, June 10 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the AJ Desmond Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak, Michigan. Services will also be held at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, 1250 Kensington Rd, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan on Saturday, June 11 at 10:00 am, followed by interment at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 25800 W 10 Mile Rd., Southfield, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dr. O'Donnell's name at the charity of one's choice.
