Paul Edward Owens (Age 53) of Vienna, Virginia died peacefully on Saturday, December 19, 2020, at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Paul was “special” in so many ways: Helpful, caring, funny, loving, grateful and encouraging. He was quick to smile and bring a smile to all he met on his life’s journey. Paul always had a dance in his feet and a song in his heart. Paul brought immense love and joy to his family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors - all of whom consider themselves beyond blessed to experience life as seen through Paul’s eyes.

Paul began his special education at age five in Fairfax County, attending Joseph Willard Center, St. Coletta’s, Jefferson Academy, Villa Maria and Kilmer Center. He graduated in 1989 from George C. Marshall High School. Paul worked at Inova Fairfax Hospital for 23 years as an Environmental Services Aide, where he was respected for his accomplishments and championed by his supervisors, co-workers, and the hospital staff. Paul competed locally in Northern Virginia Special Olympics Area 26, where he enjoyed bowling and playing softball on the Lions Pride team and looked forward to the annual Golden Helmet game. Paul was a member of Our Lady of Good Council Church and Vienna Presbyterian Church. He was an active member of the VPC Friendship Club, where he went to Sunday school, played chimes for Easter and Christmas services, helped set up coffee for after church service community and on occasion served meals and cleaned up after special events

Paul was the loving son of his late parents W.R. and Dorothy Owens. He is survived by his sisters Rosetta Owens Virgilio (Marty) and Suzanne Owens Turner (Bruce) and his brothers Richard Owens (Kellie) and John Owens (Patricia). Paul also leaves behind his beloved nieces Annaleigh (Jacob) Langhorn, Jen Owens, Sidney Owens, Caroline Owens and nephews Warren Turner, Wade Owens and Evan Owens.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where Paul was born, employed, and died; to Special Olympics Virginia Area 26; to the Washington Regional Transplant Community; and to all who supported Paul throughout the years.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 13 at 1:30 PM. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, this service will be extended to immediate family and invited guests only, but a Live Stream viewing will be available for those unable to attend in person at

Paul always was in a joyous mood, and would show kindness to all he met. He will be missed by all who knew him. I smile when I think of him. He is now in the arms of Jesus. He can now rest in heaven with his Mom and Dad. Paul was an angel in our presence, and I shall remember him always.

  11. My condolences to the Owens family. As a Thursday INOVA Heart & Vascular Institute volunteer, I got to know Paul as he came by before he left for the day. My colleague, Bill Foster’s wife Thea, would make cookies for the volunteers. Every Thursday Paul would stop in and Bill would offer him some cookies. I would offer to wrap them in a paper towel so Paul could put them in his lunch box and take them home to eat later. Sometimes I’d see Paul sitting outside, waiting for his transportation, enjoying the cookies! My fellow volunteers, Antoine, Richard, Val and Bill would joke that Paul was more likely to stop by when there was a pretty girl to talk to! Paul brightened our afternoon with his smile and gratitude for Thea’s cookies! Paul was a shining star and I know he’s shining bright from heaven. Sincerely, Denise Baxter (INOVA H&VI volunteer)

  12. So happy I had the honor of meeting you. You were such a sweet and humble soul and brought so much happiness to the people around you. God bless your sweet soul. Fondly, Michelle Abigail

  13. To the Owens families I am so sorry for your loss I know how Paul was special to each and every one of you and how you all took the time out of your busy lives to spend and share as much time with him as you could because you knew how special he was. Paul was so loved by each and every person he came into contact with. For I personally got the opportunity to spend some quality time with him as well. I will never forget our lunches we shared together and the dancing we did @ the Owens & Dove Christmas parties or the time you spent the night at our place and how you kept telling my husband @ the time that he couldn’t sleep in the same bed with me because you were my husband now, that was a memory my family still laughs about to this day. Paul I just want you to know you took a piece of my heart with you when you left us and I have a piece of yours I’ll cherish forever you were truly a great friend of mine. Rest in peace sweet angel until we meet again.
