Phyllis Manfred, a long-time resident of Rome, New York and Sunset Beach, North Carolina, passed away on September 10, 2024 in Falls Church, Virginia. Phyllis was surrounded at her passing by her loving family and friends. Born Phyllis Aquino on October 4, 1932, in Canastota, New York, Mrs. Manfred was educated in the Canastota Public Schools. She continued her education at Potsdam State Teachers College (now Potsdam State University) earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1954. Shortly after graduation, Phyllis began her teaching career in Rochester, New York. While at Potsdam State she met Robert D. Manfred, a student at Clarkson College. She married Robert in 1955 and the couple moved to Rome. Phyllis taught music and then third grade in the Rome Public Schools for more than 30 years. The couple moved to Sunset Beach after their retirement in 1992, enjoying many rounds of golf and extensive travel with long-time and new friends.

Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother. Her joyful marriage to Bob lasted 63 years, ending with his death in 2018. She was a talented musician, both on vocals and on the piano. She loved sports, was an avid golfer and a voracious reader. She and her husband volunteered countless hours to youth basketball programs in Rome over more than three decades. Mrs. Manfred was an active member of St. Paul’s parish in Rome and St. Brendan the Navigator in Sunset Beach. She also served for many years as an adult literacy volunteer in Sunset Beach.

Phyllis is survived by her three children and their spouses, Dr. Lynn Manfred Bosco and her husband Joe of Charleston, South Carolina, Robert D. Manfred, Jr. and his wife Colleen of New York City, and Lee Manfred and his wife Susan of Vienna, Virginia. Phyllis is also survived by ten grandchildren, John Bosco, Elena Bosco, Mark Bosco, Megan Manfred, Mike Manfred, Jane Manfred, Mary Clare Murphy, Jack Manfred, Kate Manfred and Liza Manfred, as well as 12 great grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna, Virginia on October 5, 2024 at 1 pm followed by a reception at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Virginia.
