Phyllis Robertson Brown
September 30, 1940 ~ September 5, 2021
Phyllis R. Brown, age 80, passed away peacefully after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease on September 5, 2021. She was born in Lewiston, Maine. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Mary Robertson and her husband, Douglas Lee Brown.
Phyllis graduated from University of New Hampshire and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She worked as a teacher for a couple of years in New Hampshire and then dedicated her life to raising her two children. She worked in Belfast, Maine as the “Toy Lady” at Ames Department store. She also worked at Rite Aid and as a substitute teacher in Waldo County.
She was active member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal church in Belfast, ME since 1980 and attended Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, VA in her last few years. She spent a lot of time working on Belfast Strawberry Festivals and luncheons/meals at the church. She was one of the founding members of the Main Street Investors club. She was also very active in Literacy Volunteers, including being president of the Waldo County Literacy Volunteers group for a short time. She valued the contributions she made toward assisting folks trying to learn to read later in life.
Phyllis is survived by her brother, John Robertson (Jane) of Sidney, ME and her daughters Ellen Evanoff (Tom) of Vienna, VA and Lori Hungerpiller (Mike) of Spring Hill, TN. She is also survived by her four grandchildren Alex and Zack Evanoff and Beth and Ryan Hungerpiller.
Memorial Service will be held at Church of the Holy Comforter, 543 Beulah Road, Vienna, VA on October 6, 2021 at 730 pm. Graveside service and burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Swanville, ME at 11:00 am on October 15, 2021. Guests welcome, masks requested by family regardless of vaccination status.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, a local Literacy Volunteers of America chapter or St Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Belfast, Maine.
