Richard Earl Cox
September 25, 1933 ~ April 8, 2020
Richard Earl Cox of Great Falls, Virginia died surrounded by his loving family on April 8, 2020 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Kitty Cox and loving and devoted father of Kathy Ann Cox Allen (Gene), Karen Lynn Cox Propheter (John), and Carolyn Mae Cox Brooks (Eric).
Richard was born in Covington, Kentucky on September 25, 1933. He served four years in the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command as a radio operator on B-29’s during the Korean War. Following his service, Richard returned to work for Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company, where he met the love of his life, Kitty Barnhart. They married on January 26, 1957. He went on to attend the University of Kentucky for two years before graduating with an economics degree from Chase Law College, Cincinnati, OH in 1961. During the next 30 years, Richard held executive positions within IBM and Control Data Corporation (CDC) in White Plains and New York, NY, Stamford and Greenwich, CT, Cincinnati, OH, Rockville, MD, Charleston, WV, and Minneapolis, MN. He retired from CDC in 1988. He completed his career at GTSI in Chantilly, VA as Director of Finance and Assistant Treasurer in 1996.
Richard loved serving in his community. He was a 40-year member of McLean Baptist Church where he was a deacon, served as an usher, and taught English as a second language to international students. He served as a volunteer fire fighter, was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, and Shriners, he was an Admiral in the Cherry River Navy in West Virginia and named a Kentucky Colonel in his native state.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family which he loved dearly. He has 6 grandchildren: Katherine (Stephen Dombkoski), Rebecca, Victoria, Alexandra, Christina, and Brandon whose ballgames, theater performances, ballet and piano recitals, dance team performances, hockey games, graduations, and academic achievements he applauded and eagerly attended. He loved to look out at his beautiful backyard graced with flowering trees, deer, and fox. Richard grew the most amazing tomatoes, lettuce and zucchini. He loved to take his family to Bethany Beach, fish, and read.
No one ever loved a family more and he demonstrated it every day. He blessed us with the greatest example of love, and we will honor him by continuing to spread the love, gentle kindness, joy, and faith that he embodied. We will miss him dearly and will hold him in our hearts all the days of our lives.

Kathy and your entire family, It is with heart felt sadness that I again share this quote, “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.” From reading Richard’s obituary, he has shared a treasure chest full of memories to all of you. With my sympathies, Steve Kmiecik
Kathy, Paige and I are very sorry for your loss. We will continue to include you and your family in our prayers. You did a great job on your Father’s obituary…what an incredible life lived to the fullest! I know you are “very” proud. Mike and Paige Myers
Dear Carolyn and Family, We are so sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. No words can take away the pain and sorrow that you and your families are feeling at this time. Remember to dwell on the wonderful memories which will keep his spirit alive. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. God’s Blessings. Love, Lucille and Dick
Richard was one of the loveliest persons I have ever met. I knew him and his family through the church, McLean Baptist. We must have joined not long apart, but I did not get to really know him and Kitty (how can you think of one without thinking of the other?) until after I retired and became more active in the church. Richard loved working with the Internationals, especially those who were just learning English and American ways. I did administrative work for them, but Richard was right there in the thick of it all. We will miss him on the back pew sitting with his family. Martha Collins
May you Rest In Peace Mr. Cox. You raised a wonderful daughter and overall family. A significant measure that like a drop of water in a pool will continue to send ripples outward of your being through the generations to come. Rest well. The Sullivans
Rest in Peace, Mr. Cox. Such a rich and fulfilling life, surrounded by loved ones and friends. May your love resonate forever. Condolences, the Ramseurs
