Was saddened to read the notice of Admiral Hutcheson’s death, a great servant of God and our country. What an outstanding life!
May Richard’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace, and may those who grieve the death of loved ones know God’s most gracious consolation. +Peter B.
My sincerest respect to my wise teacher of the ways of a Navy Chaplain and one who became my confidential friend through the years. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
I was saddened to learn of Chaplain Hutcheson’s death. He was the quaientessential chaplain and exemplary representative of the Presbyterian Church to our military personnel and family members. He was a treasured friend and valued shipmate. I have been blessed to know the Hutcheson boys. In His Grip, Blant Ferguson
Anne, Our prayers are with you and your family! We in the VPC community and the Presbyterian Chaplain community will deeply miss a very beloved chaplain and pastor. I do wish Sandy and I could be with you for the funeral but we’re currently in Texas caring for other Presbyterian Military chaplains. Yours in Christ, Ed and Sandy Brogan Director, Presbyterian Council for Chaplains 4125 Nebraska Ave, NW Washington DC 20016
Betsy and I are sadden to read about the death of Chaplain Hutcheson. I remember Chaplain Hutcheson visiting the Chaplain School in March 1974 when I was a student at the school prior to my first tour of duty. Indeed ~ he had a kind and humble spirit ~ and a man of deep faith. We send our sympathy and prayers to his loved ones.
Dear Ann and Family, From the first day I entered active duty in 1974, I heard wonderful stories about Dick Hutcheson. From then to now I believe no admiral flag was more beloved than he. I remember hearing how he tried to go visit the waterfront and care for sailors as he had always done, shocked to discover that just walking aboard a ship was no longer as simple as it had been before he put on those stars. His rep was that what he really cared about rested on the left collar of his shirt, not the right. His great faith, his competence, honesty, integrity, kindness approachability, his career and his book lived on in the minds and hearts of all who knew him and knew of him. It shall remain so now and for a very long time to come. The power of his extraordinary goodness shall not depart the Corps, but bless it always. He will stay with us and within us and we will forever be the better that this is so. Peace, Bruce Rabbi Bruce E. Kahn, D. D. CAPT, CHC, USN (Ret)
Janice and I were saddened to hear of Dick’s death and send our sincere sympathy to Ann Rivers and the family. Colonel Charles Bowden, USA (Retired)
Our sincere condolences to Ann Rivers and the family. Ann Rivers, you are in our thoughts and prayers daily. May your husband rest in peace.
Although I didn’t know Dr. Hutcheson, Ann is someone I see several times every week. I know that to have been the spouse of such a kind and gentle woman, he must have been an extraordinary man. I’m sorry for the loss to the family and those he touched. You are in my thoughts.
It would be impossible to list all the ways Chaplain Hutcheson inspired, instructed and motivated me during the years I was privileged to know him. He was a true friend as well as highly respected mentor of the many, many chaplains who valued his wisdom and guidance. We will miss him. My sincere condolences to the family.
Norma and I knew Dick as our senior pastor at Vienna Presbyterian Church. We always looked forward to his in-depth messages and I, especially, remember him fondly for wisely counseling me during a stressful employment-related situation back in the 80s. He basically said that God is in control, you are not, let Him take care of it. I followed his advice and all worked out fine. Norma and I mourn with Anne Rivers and her entire family.
Dear Ann Rivers, Susan and all of your families, Craig and I send you our love, support and prayers. Dick offered so much to the community and world. He was a dignified and wonderful man. We are thankful for his life.

Ann Rivers and family In 1969 we moved to Maryland and were first attracted to Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church when Chaplain Hutcheson was their interim minister. We have been members ever since. I was inspired by his book MAINLINE CHURCHES AND THE EVANGELICALS, and studied it with an adult ed class. It was a priviledge to know Chaplain Hutcheson.
It is with great sorry that I read of Chaplain Hutcheson’s passing and extend my deepest condolences to Hutcheson family. He is remembered with great fondness for the time he supplied the pulpit at Ashburn Presbyterian Church. He was a kind and gentle soul in all he did.
We join other family and friends in expressing our deep respect and appreciation for Dick’s marvelous and worthy life – a gentleman and scholar who did enormous good.
Dear Ann Rivers and Susan, We are so sorry to learn of Dick’s passing and send our love and best wishes to you and your families. Lee Thompson and family
Ann Rivers and Family, May God surround you with His love and comfort, giving you strength at this time. With prayers and love, Joanna and Peter
Dick was Director of the Naval Chaplains School when I began active duty in October 1967. He was the featured speaker at my retirement ceremony at Amphibious Base, Little Creek in May 1998. A mentor and friend in conversation and through his writing, his deep faith, his optimism, and wisdom enriched my life, and were passed on to other chaplains with whom I served. I love him deeply and have the same hope in the same Lord as he. God bless Rivers and his loved ones.
