Richard Southworth Lanterman

Of Annandale, VA, on December 17, 2017. Richard was born on February 17, 1929, in Charleston, WV, the son of Herbert Dillistin Lanterman and Helen Southworth Lanterman. After a childhood in Charleston, his family moved to Galveston, TX, and then to Oakridge, TN, where he graduated high school. He attended West Virginia University as an ROTC student and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Psychology. He married his lifelong best friend, Barbara Elizabeth Griffith, on October 3, 1952, and they moved to Shreveport, LA, where he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army. After a subsequent tour in Abilene, TX, he left active duty to pursue graduate work at University College London, where he completed a Master’s Degree and a PhD (ABD) and taught classes for the University of Maryland on U.S. military bases. Later, he attended the Command and General Staff College.

After a stint in Philadelphia, PA, Richard spent the majority of his career in Washington, DC, as an Operational Research Psychologist, identifying the recruiting and training needs of the armed forces. He retired as the civilian Chief Psychologist of the United States Coast Guard and as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve.

Richard’s deepest passion was for his family, followed by learning, travel, and ice cream. Over the years, he traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa, India, China, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the United States. In retirement, he enthusiastically attended a wide variety of classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University and enjoyed performances at the GMU Center for the Arts.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Griffith Lanterman, and his children Katherine B. Thompson, Owen G. Lanterman, and Megan E. Lanterman. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Robert Southworth Lanterman. Richard has three grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexander, and Lucas.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on March 28, 2019 at 11 AM at Ft. Meyer Old Post Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to “Friends of OLLI” at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University, 4210 Roberts Rd., Fairfax, VA 22032-1028 or online at:

  1. Richard was always quick to offer kind words and thanks to members of the Landscaping Committee (the Dirty Knee Club) when he found us working in the gardens at OLLI ( Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). He was a delight to chat with, and we will miss him. Our sympathy to his loved ones on their loss.
