Major General (MG) Robert Edward Murray passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on the evening of April 14, 2023 in Herndon, Virginia.

MG Murray was born in Lorain, Ohio and received his Bachelor of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees from Case Western Reserve University. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, as well as the U.S. Army War College. He was a member of the Ohio Bar.

Prior to his final Active Duty position as the Assistant Judge Advocate General, his key assignments included: Executive, Office of The Judge Advocate General (OTJAG) (1987-91); Judge Advocate, HQ, United Nations Command/United States Forces Korea/Eighth U.S. Army (1985-87); Deputy Commandant and Commandant, U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s School, Charlottesville, Virginia (1981-85); and Staff Judge Advocate, 1st Armored Division, Ansbach, Germany (1978-80); Chief of Military Justice, Military Assistance Command/Vietnam Support Command (1972-73); and Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Fort Dix, New Jersey (1969-72). His initial assignments included OTJAG (1968-69); HQ, Southern European Task Force (1964-67); and HQ, Sixth U.S. Army, Presidio of San Francisco, California (1962-64).

His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal; Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit (with oak leaf duster); the Bronze Star Medal; the Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters); the Joint Service Commendation Medal; and the Army Commendation Medal. He is also entitled to wear the Army Staff Identification Badge.

MG Murray retired from Active Duty in December 1993 and worked as a substitute teacher in the Fairfax County, Virginia school system for 20 years, teaching at the elementary school level working with special needs children and with gifted and talented students.

MG Murray is preceded in death by his parents Steven and Margaret (Kish) Murray.

MG Murray is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Vince Marie “Vee” (Curci), their son Patrick (Brenda) Murray, who served during Desert Shield/Desert Storm as an Army Tank Platoon Leader, grandchildren Lauren (Andrew) Feller, Jack Murray and Beckett Murray and great granddaughter Aurora Feller. He is lovingly remembered by his sister Margaret (Bodnar) and niece Debra Bodnar.

Memorials may be given to the St. Ambrose Catholic Church Building Fund in Annandale, Virginia. The family of MG Murray wishes to extend our sincere gratitude to the staff at Sunrise at Hunter Mill.
