Dr. Robert M. Allen
April 26, 1929 ~ August 9, 2024
Born in:
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Resided in:
Ashburn, Virginia
The family of Dr. Robert M. Allen are sad to announce the passing of their father on August 9th at the age of 95. His cause of death was most likely loneliness from the loss of companionship of his wife of 61 years, Frances D. Allen. She passed away on April 2, 2024 and, despite his children’s best efforts, he decided it was time to go.
He was born on April 26, 1929 to James Allen, Sr. and Ruth B. Allen and was the youngest of three brothers. His parents and two brothers, James Jr and William, preceded him in death. He graduated from Penn State University in 1950, where he majored in chemistry and physics, and was a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1954. Immediately upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, during which he completed a surgical internship and a residency in radiology. He married the love of his life, the former Frances M. Deluca, in 1962. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander from the U.S. Navy in 1964 and settled in Northern Virginia. Upon arrival in Fairfax, he took a job at the then new and relatively small Fairfax Hospital as a staff radiologist. Within one year, he and a partner formed Fairfax Radiological Consultants, now one of the largest radiology practices in the United States. He specialized in ultrasound and could be frequently found in a small dark room reading scans. He was a fellow of the American College of Radiology and served as the President of the Fairfax County Medical Society in 1992. He retired in 1996 and spent the next 28 years caring for a couple of treasured pets as well as enjoying life.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his son and daughter, Dr. Robert M. Allen, Jr. (Tracy) and Dr. Carol A. Allen (Martin), three grandchildren (Madison Allen, Samantha Withers and Haylie Withers) and his beloved Corgi, now lovingly cared for by his son, as well as numerous close friends of the family. Services will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 17th. Donations in his memory may be made to Penn State, Jefferson Medical College or the charity of your choice.
