Rochelle Adams Fagan

March 8, 1930 ~ January 20, 2015
Rochelle "Rockie" Adams Fagan
Age 84
Died in her home at the Fairfax Military Officers' Retirement Community in Ft. Belvoir, VA on January 20, 2105.
Rochelle was born in Pine Knot, Kentucky in 1930 to Dessie and Thomas Arnold Adams. She is survived by her brother John Adams of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and her daughter Alicia Fagan of San Diego, California as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law all over the United States.
She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, James Butler Fagan, Col. USAF, as well as her brothers Jake, Sam and Bill Adams.
Known to her friends as "Rockie," she leaves behind many whom she loved dearly and who were particularly wonderful friends in her more frail later years, including and especially Mrs. Doris Cousino, Toni Tucker and Mike Marcelis, the Pattersons, her sisters-in-lawVivian and Belle Adams, Dr. Ernest and Mary Costantino and Ms. Felicia Boateng.
Rochelle earned a college degree in teaching and English literature and started her professional life as a high school teacher in Kentucky. She was a beautiful and poetic writer with a quick, Southern wit. Always curious, patriotic, adventurous and ahead of her time, she enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably for three years in post-war Germany. It was in Germany where she developed a love of fashion, good wine and European cooking. Later in life she would attend Le Cordon Bleu in Washington DC.
She met and married James Fagan in Dayton, Ohio at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1957. She particularly enjoyed their years living in Naples, Italy which afforded them to the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe. She loved to ski the Italian and Swiss Alps, raise a stein and dance in southern Germany and she never forgave the city of Brussels for being so "frightfully cold in what should have been the springtime."
She and her husband eventually settled in suburban Maryland for the remaining tenure of her husband's 33 years of service in the United States Air Force and she eventually retired to Northern Virginia.
She was the consummate hostess, an amateur but enthusiastic historian, a vivid raconteuse, an avid reader and an advocate for children, education and disabled veterans.
She remained until the very end delighted by bounty of the Maryland coastline, southern cooking and good company.
She is deeply missed by her family.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm on May 29, 2015 at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel, 204 Lee Avenue, Building 335, Fort Myer, VA 22211 followed immediately by a burial with honors in Arlington Cemetery. She will join her husband in Section 60.
Following the service, a Southern supper and celebration of her life will be held at 5pm at the Hotel Monaco in 480 King Street in Old Town, Alexandria, 22314.
