Wesley Ronald Martin (Ron)
of Centreville, VA, passed away May 18 at Fair Oaks Hospital with family by his side. Born March 1, 1946 to Wesley Raymond (deceased), and Shirley Anne Waggoner Martin of Vienna, Va. Beloved husband of Brenda L. Martin, and loving Father of Sean Wesley Martin. Survived by sister, June E. Martin of Manassas, brother Michael (Carol) of Fairfax, Timothy Martin (Maria) of Eugene, Or., sisters-in-law, Martha A. Long, Dorothy Teates & Janet Teates; brothers-in-law, Malcolm Long and Roger Teates. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Martin was a Vietnam Veteran who served in the Army from January 1969 until November 1971, attached to the M.U.S.T. Engineers (Medical Unit Self Contained Transportable), where he was the M.U.S.T. Utility Element Specialist operating and maintaining the gas turbine engines that inflated the portable field hospitals. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
An avid space enthusiast, he spent 25 + years as a NASA contractor. Ron managed the development of hardware ranging from printed circuit boards to harnesses to electronic subsystems for satellites that helped humanity gain new knowledge of the Earth, Sun, and moon, the solar system, and the universe. He supported missions including SAMPEX that studied space weather; SMAP which measures the Earth's soil moisture content from space; OSIRIS-REx which is on its way to retrieve samples from Asteroid Bennu; the Hubble Space telescope, which continues to give us new views of the universe and its successor the James Webb Space Telescope which will launch in 2018. He also managed personnel in the Radiation Effect Analysis Group, who performed testing and analysis investigating the effects of radiation on electronics and photonics.
His wide ranging experience gave him a unique perspective on every aspect of electrical systems development. His willingness to share the lessons he had learned made him an invaluable mentor to people throughout the NASA community.
He will be remembered for his humor, quick wit, intelligence and his musical talents of harmonica, guitar and singing.

A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, May 23, at 10 a.m. with service at 11 a.m. at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 West Maple Avenue, Vienna, VA 22180.

Ron was a very loving & supportive husband and father. I know he will be missed, but Brenda & Sean, along with the rest of his family and friends, have plenty of wonderful memories to hold in their hearts.
