Roy Feuchter, a former National Director of Recreation Management for the U.S. Forest Service, passed away on Saturday, November 26. Upon receiving his degree from the University of California-Berkeley, Roy began his lifelong career with the Forest Service. His early years were spent in field activities including the initial use of air tankers in firefighting. He was on the avalanche control team for the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley and was heavily involved in the development of several major ski areas in the U.S. He rose to Director for all outdoor recreation activities before he retired after 37 years. He was a charter member of the Senior Executive Service. He has been honored by the National Parks and Recreation Association, the National Ski Areas Association, and the National Society of Park Resources for whom he served as president. He was a member of the curriculum committee for recreation at the University of Maryland and Virginia Tech. He was a representative of the U.S. Information Agency to the former Soviet Union and to Japan under the aegis of the US-Japan Environmental Protection Agreement. Following retirement from federal service, he and his wife Helen owned and operated a paint and wallpaper store in Vienna, VA. They were married 52 years. Roy was a private pilot, expert skier, certified SCUBA diver, and antique auto and firearm buff. He spent several weeks each year in the Caribbean, where he wrote his first novel, Tunnel. He is survived by son Mark, daughters Susan and Karen, and seven grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held on January 14, 2016.
