Ruby Lee Tuohy

Ruby Lee Tuohy, 89, WW II veteran and retired Corps. of Engineers employee died on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at her home in Alexandria, Va from complications of Leukemia. She was a resident of the the Alexandria section of Fairfax County for 54 years. She was born Ruby Lee Summey in High Point, NC. At the beginning of WW II, she moved to Baltimore to help build bombers at the Glenn L. Martin Plant, one of the original "Rosie the Riveters". She joined the Coast Guard in 1943 and served as a Pharmacist Mate for the duration of the war. During that time she met and married Coast Guardsmen Robert Tuohy, with whom she stayed married until his death in 1970. After moving to Virginia in 1956, Mrs. Tuohy became active in local civic causes and Democratic Party politics for almost 20 years. In 1974, she went to work for the Department of the Army where she held positions in the finance centers of the Military District of Washington and the Corps of Engineers. Mrs. Tuohy retired from the federal government in 1987. Survivors include two sisters, Carleen Reagan and Wilma Sowers of High Point and Greensboro, NC; her children, Carrie Donnelly of Herndon, Va; Robert and Sharon Tuohy, Jr of Alexandria; Teresa and James Mumby of Greenwich, NY; William and Theresa Tuohy of Fairfax, Va and Gregory and Deborah Tuohy of Olmstead, OH; 15 grandchilden and 5 great grandchildren.
