Rufus C. Porter

Capt. Rufus C. Porter, age 96, died peacefully at home on January 19, 2015. Born in North Carolina and raised in Alabama, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1942, only 12 days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in combat operations during WWII aboard the destroyer USS Reid (DD-369)in the Pacific Fleet. His peacetime career included four commands at sea in destroyers and two tours of duty in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
Retiring in 1972, he settled in McLean, Virginia, accepted civilian employment and later became dedicated volunteer activity. He was an officer in the Washington Chapter of the Naval Academy Alumni Association, and his Naval Academy Class, for decades.
He is survived by two children, John Porter of Atlanta and Julia Porter of Portland, Oregon; two sisters, Anne Nettles of Destin, Florida and Allison Fell of Birmingham, Alabama; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His wife Elizabeth and daughter, Patricia, pre-deceased him.
