Russell W. Myers
January 16, 1927 ~ May 3, 2016
Russell Wayne Myers, better known as "Grandpa," passed away May 3, 2016 at the Winchester Medical Center.
The sixth out of nine children, he was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania, as he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and was a loyal Pittsburgh sports fan. For several years, he was the anchor leg on his local bowling team. Grandpa spent over 30 years teaching for the Hempfield Area School District before retiring in the late 1970's.
It was after his retirement, at the age of 53, that he decided to sponsor families from foreign countries through WorldVision. After sponsoring a few individuals and families, he decided to fully sponsor the Ly family to the Greensburg area where he would house them and help them assimilate to their new surroundings. When the family decided to move to Northern Virginia in 1988, Grandpa decided to join them. From that point on, he has been known as "Grandpa," to almost everyone he has encountered through churches and friends of the family.
Grandpa's generosity, work ethic, humility and selflessness are all qualities that were admired. He was a man of God who showed his passion and love for others through his volunteer work and invitations to serve together. He was involved in and served as a mentor in the Babe Ruth Little League of Arlington. In 1993, he was recognized as the Arlington Better Sports Club's Sportsman of the Year for his work with youth. He loved teaching the Children's Bible Study class at church, sang baritone in the church choir and even enjoyed playing volleyball and softball well into his 70's.
His interests included family time, bowling, walking, watching sports on T.V. (especially the Pittsburgh Steelers), reading and most of all enjoying a wide array of desserts. Grandpa enjoyed babysitting his numerous "grandchildren" either in the neighborhood or at home. Although single and never married, he lived with and considered the Ly family his "adopted" family as they were able to provide care for him these past several years.
Russell Myers is survived by his sister Grace Halula, who resides in California, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret and his brothers, Harry, James, Edgar, Wilbert, Melvin and Charles.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to WorldVision, as a reminder to the godsend he was to the Ly family.

I was blessed to have known Grandpa. On occasions I had the privilege of driving him to Wednesday evening services. I learned so much about him and his love for the children and families he sponsored. The children at church loved him and so did anyone who had the opportunity to know him. A true man of God and a gift to so many. Our loss is heaven’s gain. Thanks To The Ly family for letting me be a part of Grandpa’s life. 💖
We are blessed to have known Grandpa. What a beautiful tribute to him in his obituary. We are so sorry that we can not be with you today Love and Blessings Ken and Marilyn
