ARAH F. CHOWNING (Age 79)
Sarah F. Chowning, of Fairfax, Va., formerly of San Antonio, passed away peacefully November 4, 2016. She had Alzheimer's disease.
Born Sarah Francis Bias on October 8, 1937, in Sharples, W. Va., she graduated from high school two years early and attended Marshall University. After two years of study, she left school to marry Thomas B. Chowning, and began the career of a military wife. They were subsequently stationed in Homestead, Fla., and San Antonio, Tx. (Lackland). While in San Antonio, she worked as a substitute school teacher for Bexar county schools, and was an active member of Marbach Christian Church.
Upon her husband's retirement, they moved to Front Royal, Va., in 1974, where she continued working as a substitute teacher and later a teacher's aide for Warren county. In 1985, she and her husband moved to Saudi Arabia to work for the Department of the Treasury, and while there, Sarah oversaw housing operations for the Joint Economic Commission Operation Riyadh (JECOR). After 10 years, they retired and returned to San Antonio, where she became active tutoring children with learning disabilities, and as a member of Western Hills Christian Church. After her husband's death in 2010, she moved to Fairfax, Va., to live with her daughter.
She is predeceased by her husband and her son, Steven T. Chowning; she is survived by her daughter, Donna Reid; her grandchildren, Joey Reid, Shanna Tate, and Jared Chowning; and by four great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
