Smith, Stanley Edwin, USN (Ret.), born Oct. 11, 1920 in Brusett, Montana, died Oct. 6, 2012 at the Washington DC VA Medical Center. Beloved husband of the late Helen Curtin; loving father of Nancy Tener and her husband, John, Susan Grant, Beau Smith (deceased), Mike Smith, and Kathleen Brown and her husband, Rocky; nurturing grandfather to John Michael and Joseph Brusett Sconyers, Lisa and Chris Giovarelli, Nora Mae Smith, Margette Harle, and Emily, Lucas, and Sara Brown; doting great-grandfather to Mark and Ron Harle, Callie, Jack, and Abby Sconyers, and Welles Smith Sconyers (born Oct. 12, 2012). He is also survived by his dear sister, Frances Trimble, of Chevy Chase. Stan grew up in South Carolina and joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor. He flew F6F Hellcats in the Pacific during World War II and was a member of the Navy's first guided missile squadron. A fifty-year resident of Dunn Loring, Virginia, Stan was an avid golfer who also fished the fairways. Besides his children, his great love was the American West. Every summer during high school, he jumped freight trains back to Montana to work as a wrangler. His gentle soul will be sorely missed.
