Suzanne "Sue" Babbitt, 89, died Saturday, December 21, 2019.

She leaves behind three children and their spouses; Carrie Newcome (her late husband Laurence), Jay McCauley and his wife Kathleen; Clint McCauley and his wife Leslie, her six grandchildren; Wes, Ryan and Laura Newcome; Sean and Elizabeth McCauley; Colin McCauley; and her just born great-grandchild, Claudine Newcome.

Proceeding Sue in death is her first husband, Cornelius McCauley (Con), with whom she raised a family until his death in 1976. Also proceeding Sue in death is her second husband, Captain Franklin Babbitt (USN Ret.) with whom she was married from 2000 until his death in 2007.

Sue was born in New York City on July 2, 1930, but raised in Chicago. Con and Sue were married in Taipei, Taiwan in 1956. At the time of their marriage, both Con and Sue were on foreign assignment in U.S. Government service. Sue resigned from US Government service to accompany Con on numerous two and three year long tours in Asia including Indonesian, Malaysia and Korea while raising their three children. Sue and Con's last overseas assignment was perhaps their most challenging. Con served in Quang Nia, Vietnam (72-74), during the final years of America's conflict in Vietnam. During Con's years in Vietnam, Sue continued raising their children safely, but by herself, in Taiwan for a second time. Sue, Con and family returned to Vienna, VA in 1974. After years overseas, Sue was happy to stay in Vienna where she was a continuous resident until moving into assisted living at Sunrise Hunter Mill in Oakton, VA in 2017.

Sue returned to the workforce upon the death of her first husband, Con, working as an administrative assistant at the Shannon & Lochs Real Estate Co. in Vienna, VA and then as a contract administrative assistant for the US Department of State. Even after Sue retired from her professional working life, circa 1995, she continued to serve her community as a volunteer at the Pennywise Thrift Shop in Vienna, VA. She was a regularly attending member of the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, VA, where she met and married her second husband, Captain Franklin Babbitt, and where she continued regular attendance until suffering a stroke in 2011.

Sue will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, world traveler, hard working professional, willing volunteer and loyal resident of Vienna. VA. She fondly recalled discovering Vienna in 1963 and then buying a home there that same year when she said “It was a quiet, southern, small town with maple trees growing down the center of Maple Ave.”

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 11 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at Money and King Funeral Home; 171 Maple Ave W; Vienna, VA, followed by a family-member-attended interment at 1:00 pm at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fairfax Station.
