A veteran who proudly served his country, passed away on March 21, 2013 at the age of 92 in Vienna, VA.
Thomas is survived by loving wife of 63 years, Alda, sons; Thomas III, Michael, Patrick and Kirk, grandchildren; Michelle and Thomas IV and great grandchildren; Evan and Hailey.
Col. Whalen served his country in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. A military career that spanned 35 years, Tom was a member the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions while serving Tours of Duty in the U.S.A, Philippines, Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
Among his military service awards are The Silver Star, Legion of Merit w/OLC, Bronze Star Medal w/3 OLC and "V" Device, Air Medal w/1 OLC, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Army Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), National Defense Service Medal w/1 OLC, Gallantry Cross (Vietnam) w/Palm, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, United Nations Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Honor Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Greece), Chueng-My-Medal , Medal of Merit (Second Class), Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd award), and Master Parachutist Badge.
Tom is a graduate of University of Nebraska at Omaha and attended Campbell University School of Law in N. Carolina.
A generous man, Tom will be remembered for his contributions to numerous charities, such as Covenant House, Salesian Missions, St. Joseph's Indian School SD. And Catholic Relief Services.
Funeral services will be held at Ft. Myer Memorial Chapel on Thursday June 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., followed immediately by internment at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
A reception will be held afterward at the Elk's lodge on Holly Ave. in Sterling, VA.
