December 20, 1960 – March 30, 2019

Thomas Warren “TJ” Jones was born on December 20, 1960 to Kenneth R. and Ruth M. (Hanley) Jones in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He died suddenly at his home in Vienna, Virginia, on March 30, 2019.

Rear Admiral Jones is survived by Pam Jones, his wife of 34 years, his daughter, Madison Kate, who is a senior at the University of New Hampshire; the world’s best shih tzu, Minnie; his parents, Ken and Ruth Jones, brothers Ken (Nancy) Jones of Lake Worth, Florida; Steven (Heather) Jones of Chapel Hill, NC; nieces and nephews Keara, Casey, Graham, and Kate; and a plethora of friends and family nationwide.

After graduating from Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland in 1979, Tom “TJ” Jones attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he became a lifelong Terrapin fan. On a spring break trip to Key West in 1982, TJ met his future wife, Pamela C. Jones. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1983. After graduation, he fulfilled his dream of joining the Coast Guard by enrolling in Coast Guard Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, Virginia, receiving his commission in 1984. TJ and Pam married on September 1, 1985, and have been enjoying a life of adventure and service to their country, their family, and the Coast Guard ever since.

Rear Admiral Jones served 33 years in the Coast Guard. He retired as a Rear Admiral on June 30, 2017. His diverse career included staff and field assignments across the Coast Guard enterprise. His Flag officer assignments included: Director of Strategic Management of Doctrine, Director of Operational Logistics and the Deputy for Mission Support. His staff assignments included: Chief of the Office of Civil Engineering, Chief, Office of Budget and Programs at Coast Guard Headquarters, where he served as the principle advisor to the Commandant of the Coast

Guard; Program Reviewer and the Acquisition, Construction and Improvements Budget Coordinator in the Coast Guard Chief of Staff’s Office; and Fifth Coast Guard District Civil Engineering staff.

Rear Admiral Jones’ field assignments included service as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Research & Development Center; Commanding Officer of Civil Engineering Unit Providence; Project Manager at the Facilities Design and Construction Center, Atlantic; Facilities Engineering Officer at Integrated Support Command Portsmouth; Greater Antilles Section Civil Engineer and Industrial Manager; and sea tours in Coast Guard Cutters TANEY and INGHAM. After retirement, he served as the Director of the Cyber-Chief Information Officer-C4IT Transformation Program Integration Office. He then became a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) for the Coast Guard and served as the Director of Hurricane Reconstitution.

Rear Admiral Jones earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College; a Master of Public Administration Degree from Old Dominion University; and a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois.

His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, four Legions of Merit, and three Meritorious Service Medals. He was also recognized as the Coast Guard Engineer of the Year in 2004. Rear Admiral Jones was also a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

TJ’s greatest joys in life were Pam, Madison, Minnie, and the rest of his family, friends and the Coast Guard. He enjoyed living life and eating dessert to a soundtrack of diverse music (especially live or on public radio); cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Maryland Terrapins, and the Green Bay Packers. He approached life wearing proverbial rose-colored glasses, with a glass-is-half-full attitude. He made the most of every day and had a wealth of optimism and a willingness to serve his friends, family, country and community in any capacity.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I was sorry to hear the loss of TJ today. As part of the Mariner Rowdies he demonstrated good clean fun in school. I’m thankful you- Pam and Melodie, had him for so many years.

  2. My sincerest condolences to TJ’s family and his many friends. We went to high school together, and though we’ve not been in touch directly over the years, a mutual friend continues to keep me up on some of the guys. TJ was one of those guys. I received a text on Saturday about TJ’s passing, and was shaken. TJ was always a bright light, bringing joy to those around him. I pray for peace and comfort to his family and friends. Rest peacefully, TJ.

  3. It was 1985, or maybe 1984 aboard TANEY when a young Mr. Jones reported aboard. He was a kind and professional junior officer then and he is remembered and respected now. Rest easy TANEY shipmate. I think his name is on the Engineering plaque aboard ship even today. We live on long after our mortal souls are gone. God grant the Jones family solace in their loss. He was a good soul and a great shipmate. r/pc

  4. Dear Pam and Maddie, Words cannot begin to express my sorrow. May peace and comfort find you both during this difficult time. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. Please remember that you are not alone….let me know if I can help in any way. Lori Bean USCG BASE Portsmouth

  5. Pam, We are so sorry to hear of the Admiral’s passing. I served under him during his last year in San Juan, PR and my wife and I remember him and you well. Our deepest sympathies are with you, and your daughter. Jake and Colleen McCarty

  6. Before Thomas Warren Jones was a R/ADM – USCG, he was TJ, Captain of a band of boys transitioning to men during some magical summers at Maxwell Point off Gunpowder Cove. He loved boats and taught us all too many nautical things to list. He judged no one, saw the best in everyone, and made sure we were all smiling (or laughing) starting at N6. For those of us who knew him then – Kevin M, Rob K, Steve K, Rich S, Karl S, David L, and Jim Q, and countless others, we were lucky to have his friendship, and we all knew he was headed for great things. Pam and Madison, all of my prayers are for you since the moment I was told of his passing. Joe Patton

  7. Pam & Madaline, There are no words that we can say or express that haven’t been said. Tom was an exemplary Officer and Gentleman as well as a devout Husband and Father. A true Friend that will never be forgotten and a relationship that will always be cherished. God Bless You! Bill Haas

  8. RADM Jones was someone I considered as one of my mentors. He provided me with the necessary guidance to succeed in my first job with the Coast Guard. He continued to offer support and encouragement in every job I had afterwards. He will truly be missed. G. Jackson

  9. Sharon and I just found out about this whole thinking of old friends. We met Tom and Pam at the U of IL. Such nice people. So sad to hear of this. All the wonderful comments about Tom were totally true. The world lost a beautiful soul.
