William L. Doughten, 91, of Springfield, Va., formerly of Vienna, Va., passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Fairfax Hospital.
Beloved husband of Doris Elizabeth Doughten; devoted father of Michael (Teresa), Suzanne (David) and Janel (James); grandfather of Connor and Kira; brother of the late Gus (the late Mid) and brother-in-law of Amy.
Bill was born in Pedricktown, NJ, a small town in southern NJ with a large extended family of Aunts, Uncles and cousins living just blocks away. While attending Drexel University in Philadelphia, Bill met Doris Webb from the same small town. Bill graduated from Drexel with a degree in Chemical Engineering. After a stint in the Army, where Bill and Doris got married, Bill was honorably discharged, started a family and worked for a few different companies before he found a home with IBM in 1964 in Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1972, with three children, Bill and Doris moved to Vienna, VA after Bill was transferred to the IBM plant in Manassas, VA.
Bill was the longtime Treasurer at Oakton United Methodist Church and a member of the Vienna
Optimist Club. After retiring from IBM, Bill spent a lot of time volunteering for various organizations and played softball with the Northern Virgina Senior Softball league, including participation in a traveling league. Doris and Bill enjoyed planning vacations around the traveling league tournaments, and got to see a lot of the US during that time.
Bill loved sports, especially the Washington Nationals, the old Washington football team, George Mason University, Drexel and Old Dominion University men’s basketball teams. College basketball was a family affair.
Funeral services will be held at Oakton United Methodist Church, 2951 Chain Bridge Rd., Oakton, Va., on Saturday, January 20th at 1:00 PM. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church hall. The interment will be private for the family and they will return to the church to join everyone at the reception.
