William Matthew Dorie

William M. Dorie, retired decorated Navy Captain, passed away on December 6, 2019. Captain Dorie was born in 1922 in Brooklyn, NY, the second son of John A. and Emma C. Dorie. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was commissioned an Ensign and Naval Aviator in December 1943, thereafter serving as a Carrier Fighter Pilot aboard the USS Franklin in the Pacific theater until the end of hostilities in 1945. After transferring to the Naval Reserve, he was released to inactive duty and in 1946 married Margaret M. Brogan of Coalinga, CA, in Alexandria, VA. He attended the George Washington University and the GWU Law School until the Korean Conflict began when he was recalled to active duty and again assigned to Carrier duty aboard the USS Essex. Following the war, he remained on active duty and served in various operational and staff assignments in the US and Europe. While on active duty during WWII, Captain Dorie was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross, Five Air Medals and several theater ribbons. He retired from the Navy in 1967 where he and his family settled in Northern Virginia. Subsequently he held positions in the Federal Government with the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. His final position before again retiring in 1984 was as Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of the NRC. Upon retirement, he was a Red Cross Volunteer at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD for over 15 years. Captain Dorie’s wife, Margaret, preceded him in death in 1994 after forty-eight years of marriage. Captain and Mrs. Dorie had five loving and supportive daughters, two preceding him in death; daughters Susan D. Shreve and Lolly D. Rann. Three surviving daughters are Cecilia D. Finch, (Bill) El Dorado Hills, CA; Kathleen D. Cerpanya (Neal) of Frisco, Texas; and Honore D. Hastings (Rick) of Marshall, VA. Bill and Margaret were blessed with eleven grandchildren: Bill, Tom, Kenny, Kim, Sarah, Rachel, Lynsey, Aaron, Ashley, Eric, Erin; and eighteen great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday, December 13, from 2 to 4pm at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Ave W, Vienna, VA. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
